It's been mentioned many times before when photographing events i.e. ( Butterfly World) as to how many shots should I take. Well, I went there a few months ago and took over 100 photos. The best one I took was the last one I took existing the park.

in answer to your question.--ONE--..
of course that was the teaching of "film" days..know your equipment, train yourself to operate it properly.drill yourself in composition/focus/etc. and shoot it right the first time..thats history for today[and hard to break training]..

today, I shoot 2or3 and go on..I ALWAYS try to think ahead and work for 60/70% success. am very seldom successful, but with my training and effort,it means I have more time for more subjects..
this all calls for snap decisions, which means training the mind..

your pic looks great,,it could possibly touched up..other than
that--its a great pic..--joe

Agree with the others, the picture posted is a good one. In photography, as in hockey you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. If you have the opportunity take the shots, but don't rush to the point where your no where you don't know where your going with it. Keep a clear eye and a steady hand.

Great shot, I'm drawn more to the flower, I imagine that was your focal point. I bet you more good ones out of that yard.

First, LOVE the shot just as it is.. The butterfly looks like it is illuminated by the flower which to me, makes it perfect..

As far as shots is concerned.. As a "Professional" I am old school, I started out in film, so I have that mentality as far as I don't shoot until my fingers fall off..
I like to take the time to know my camera and my subject and make the shots count.. When I do outdoor model shoots I generally take about 120 - 170 shots (about 4-6 -rolls of film when I used to use film).. Before I got into this genre and used to do strictly sports photography I could go through 10-rolls of film between the 3-cameras I used, but then your shooting action, and it is a bit different. Plus most of the time you had different film in each camera..

Personally I do not have the time to look through 1000's of photos looking for the right one.. so my personal preference is to shoot smart, know your equipment and know your subject.

That being said, I shoot tons of "film" though now its digital, to learn a new camera and all of its functions, as well as to get experience with the subject you like to shoot.. (where your passion is)

So........
A hobbyist should shoot as many as they want.. If you are into it for the Hobby and for the passion, shoot to your hearts content.. There is no "rule", the rule lies only in your passion for what you are doing..

The detail in this photo Is super. Being able to see the feeler on the butterfly wow ! If I'm shooting something that moves taking a lot of shots, planing, patients and luck is what it takes for me. If I'm shooting the flower alone I would "work the shot" by trying different dof and pov. Your photo is super as is , but you might crop the right side to eliminate the intruding leaf.

How much is to much? It depends on what you are photographing. I discovered bees when I got my first digital point and shoot five years ago. Bees do not stay in one place for a very long time, unless it is cold. My ration used to be for every 100 shot, I deleted about 80 and twenty were the best but 10 were very good and two or three or one were fantastic. Over the years, I became very good at getting better bee photos that my deletions are now to a minimum. For flowers, I take a few but try to vary my technique to get different angles.

When I do a portrait or modeling port shoot, I do between 150 and 300 shots. My average is 1 out of 13 are keepers. Simple fact is....just becuz a shot looks decent in the viewfinder, it doesn't mean it will translate over well when you view it for finishing on your puter. I am extremely critical of myself. Clients would keep abut 50% haha, I find about 8% are keepers.
