On a slightly different note....

I gotta wonder how many people backup, but never test their ability to restore until it is too late, then they discover that their backups are worthless and their important data is gone with the wind.

I get a cloud in my house when cooking goes wrong.

Me too but it doesn't store data very well.. the only data that I can get from cooking clouds is that the stove is too hot or the food was on too long.

Wasn't Franklin the first to download from the cloud?

Anything stored offsite is under someone else's control and possible negligence!

Interesting...
From the article: "....you’re depending on someone else’s computers — that activity is cause for concern."

We depend on other computers more than we think?
Airlines, planes, & trains
Power company
Phone company
Cable/satellite company
..
Should I be any more concerned about a "file back-up" company?
(I'm not.)

If YOUR data is important to you, then you SHOULD be very concerned about cloud storage services. If THEY go under, YOUR data is GONE. If THEY choose to SELL YOUR DATA, you can't stop them proactively. Cloud services are very attractive targets for data theft. NO ONE is going to target YOUR computer as part of an international data theft attempt, but you can bet your ass that cloud storage providers are targeted 24 hours per day. And as all the high-level data thefts that have occurred lately prove, they do NOT care about protecting YOUR data. If you pay close attention and read the reports, you will see that in the average data theft, the private information of the company being attacked is rarely stolen, only YOUR data is stolen. And that is because the companies that provide these services KNOW that the loss of THEIR private data could put them out o business. The loss of YOUR private data will, at best, simply result in the company paying higher insurance premiums.

If they go under I'll get another cloud backup provider. I still have my two backups in the mean time.
ANYTHING on the internet is subject to being absconded. There will ALWAYS be people trying to steal data from anywhere they can, it will not stop.

I use cloud backup only for photos and music. I use two external hard drives plus an internal hard drive to back up all data on my computer. My "secure" drive is connected to the computer only when I do an incremental backup using Norton. I guess you have to trust something and I have chosen Norton for both my security and my backup--but not enough to not unplug the "secure" device when not in use. Paranoid? Absolutely! Paranoid enough? I hope so.

Jerry I agree I don't back anything up to a cloud. I use multiple hard drives. Clouds are nothing more than someone's servers that are at risk of failure, or damage.

The uncertainty any cloud service provider being there is why my backups are only on external drives. 3 different types.

My web site is "in the cloud" on someone else's server, I suppose it's at risk of failure also.
(little data / lotta data...)

That's why I like my WD Cloud.. I own the Cloud server, I own the internet connection within my house/office and everything connected. Once WD completes the sale of the hardware, they no-longer have anything to do with it. (unless, of course you need service). I don't rely on any secondary company that "owns the cloud server or anything else. Now, the only way I could make mine more secure would be to have it located at home and connect to it from an office some miles away. However, I can connect and use it to back up camera footage to get it away from any hotel/motel that Im staying at around the world as LONG AS I HAVE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY at the hotel/motel or I can go to a wi-fi hotspot.
