“David Busch's Nikon D850 Guide to Digital SLR Photography”, by David Busch and another ‘Mastering the Nikon D850” by Darrell Young. What's wrong with that large instruction manual?

Ditto what Pixelstan said. I never purchase a camera without a David Bush book to go with it.

The David Busch book is very thorough but
I also suggest you get the PDF copy of the
user manual from Nikon. That manual does
have useful info on a reference basis, but a
paper copy is a PITA while the PDF has two
good advantages: 1. It's searchable, and 2.
it looks bigger and clearer on-screen than
on paper.

I only know two series of books. The David
Busch are excellent. The only other series I
have seen are "From Snap Shots to Great
Shots"
, and those are nearly useless as to
specific cameras. Each is "dedicated" to a
particular camera, but 90% of each book is
just generic basic photo lessons ... identical
from book to book ... while the info on the
particular camera is rather cursory.

The latter series would be great for a total
noob to photo who is also learning to use
a non-advanced-model camera. IOW if the
D850 is even included in that series, that
would be quite absurd :-)

Another great reason for the PDF files is you can copy them to the SD card. That and a cable and you can read then anywhere there's a computer.
BTW, look it up on Youtube. LOTS of info, most of it is good.

I bought the David Busch book for the Nikon D500 some time ago before the book on the D850 was released. The cameras are so similar that it worked well for me. I preordered the Darrell Young book from Amazon when they first started taking orders. After 3 months, I cancelled. If you ever get one, let me know how you like it.

I recommend books by Tom Hogan http://www.bythom.com/ as far as I know he only writes books about Nikon. After him I’d by Darrel Young. I would never buy a David Busch instruction book. I bought his book for my Olympus camera I found important information was left out and there were errors. Also he had chapters on processing. He is a factory turning out these books. Look at a website called Nikonians. Also on creativelive.com there are classes called fast start. I bought one for my Fuji the instructor is excellent and you own the class for life. I’m sure they have one for your camera.

You can't go wrong with a book from Busch. Also, check https://www.creativelive.com/class/nikon-d850-fast-start-john-greengo?via=autocomplete

John makes great videos for a variety of cameras.

Steve Perry has 45 minute youtube on the 850, and a $16 ebook on autofocusing of the new nikons that goes into depth on the different options, the ones he uses a lot verses the ones he didn't find very useful. He's primarily a wildlife photographer, but focus is critical for him. It was my impression that the 850 has replaced his 500 and even his D5 in many situations, but not all types of shooting.

I agree with your Steve Perry choices. I bought Busch's D850 book was not as good as I expected. Too much fluff and little substance. He rushed the book to be he first one on the block. Busch made a mistake by doing so. I haven't seen Darrell Young's book because he is taking his time to do it right, I assume.

I have Klostermann's ebook for my camera, the EOS 77d; it is simply superb
so I heartily recommend this ebook for your camera.

In spite of what others say, the User Manual is a necessity and a great reference but a very poor teaching tool.

Good luck with your photography!

Agree with Hogan books. I have this and the Busch book for D500. Hogan writes on a completely different level

“David Busch's Nikon D850 Guide to Digital SLR Photography,” in my opinion. I also recommend D850 review videos by Tony and Chelsea Northrup, and “Nikon D850 Rieview For Wildlife, Landscape, and Nature” by Steve Perry.
