Sure you get more reach with a DX lens, but using it on a full frame camera, you also use a smaller part of the sensor. So if you already have a DX camera, there's no advantage to buying a full frame camera if you are going to use DX lenses on it. That's what the Best Buy clerk should have told her (if he knew that).

Don't open up another can of worms with the "more reach" characterization of DX lenses!

I know, this kind of stuff makes my crazy and a bit jealous too. Non-photographers with cash and no skills and likely little talent.

Please don't feel that way.

But what is the point of buying a full frame camera if you are going to use DX lenses and not get to use the full sensor. You might as well keep using the 7200.

John, you asked "What's the point ...". There is no point. Here is a paste of the OP's updated question ... "She bought the camera a year and a half ago but has not had it out of the box until this week. My question should have been can she use the dx lenses from her D7200?" The OP wanted to know if she could use her DX lenses. This is the question I answered; I try not to get into the why's, wherefore's, and correctness of her decision. She bought it over a year ago so it's too late anyway.

The beauty of cameras like the D850, D750, and other FX bodies is that they are 2 cameras in 1. You can use all of your DX VR lenses on them, as well as the FX lenses. Your image area for DX is automatically designated in the viewfinder. Often, the high-res of the FX is not that important, just the usable image is. The "Why buy a FX camera and put a DX lens?" argument is rather foolish, as you haven't thrown out the FX features, just added the DX versatility.

OK, but if you already have a great DX camera and DX lenses, and don't want to buy new lenses, why buy a FX camera?

John, there's no right/wrong. I understand your position but it's not relevant. You and I have no knowledge of the reason why she bought the D850 so as an answer to your question, try this ... "Because she wanted to".

Because it's cool? I'll never forget the first time I was on the street with a D800. I passed a stranger who said, "D800", and gave me a big thumbs up. I was smiling all day. sm02:

The D850 has a setting that allows use of DX lenses, with no problems of vignetting or anything else.
I use my D850 with the 18-200 VR all the time, and that is my walk-around lens.
The 850 is an exceptional camera, and many think it's the best available camera now. It is, though, is a very complicated camera and not for beginners or those who don't want to invest very serious learning time.
Good luck to your friend.

...fact is, in DX mode the 850 will produce images equal to
(or better than, in some aspects) a D500.

Not true. If you attach a Dx lens to an Fx Nikon and have not turned on Auto Dx Crop, at least the D810 and D850, the viewfinder and live view display the entire potential viewing area with a shaded box around the part of the image that is outside of the Dx crop area. It presents composition issues if you forget in the heat of the moment, and frame your shot incorrectly.

...I shot like that for awhile with my D800, and it took some getting used to (especially since I'm runnin' and gunnin' alot)...since, I've not had much need to use the crop factor view, figuring that if I want to go there it's pretty easy in post. I've assigned one of the Fn buttons of my D5 for that, but have been thinking I don't need it anymore...

Moving up to full frame has many rewards but having to buy new full frame (FX) lenses is not one of them but it is certainly worth the expense. You won't realie the capability of your D850 without them.

A friend of mine has a Nikon D850 when she bought it new the Best Buy clerk told her that her VR lenses from her D7200 could be used on it. I read the D850 Manual, and it does NOT list the VR lens for being used on the D850. My thinking is that she will have to buy new lenses for her D850. Anyone know for certain? Thanks

I own a couple of D7200's and I know the FX and the DX lenses will work on them as I have both lenses. The FX works but you never see what the extra pace that you do not photograph look like. A DX lens on the other hand on a D850 will work but you will see a dark edge on the film frame that is where a FX lens expands the image out to. The D850 will and should automatically adjust for the DX lens. But a VR lens may not, if auto focus, not focus except in a manual mode just as it probably did on the D7200. The D850 like the D7200 does work in full manual mode and the main difference is that one (D7200) is DX while the other(D850) is full frame and has no built in flash.
