A friend of mine has a Nikon D850 when she bought it new the Best Buy clerk told her that her VR lenses from her D7200 could be used on it. I read the D850 Manual, and it does NOT list the VR lens for being used on the D850. My thinking is that she will have to buy new lenses for her D850. Anyone know for certain? Thanks

A D850 requires FX lenses. VR FX lenses are fine on a D850. I would not use DX lenses on the D850, so yes, she needs to buy new glass.

That is no possible to answer without more info. The D7200 is a Dx format camera and can operate with both Dx and Fx lenses. The D850 is a Fx format camera and will not be able to use most Dx lenses without getting some of the outermost parts of the frame darkened. Most likely, it would be an absolute waste to use the D850 with the (typically) lower quality and format paired with most d7200 cameras.

It sounds like your friend bought the camera without knowing much about cameras and I am shaking my head a little by the choice of a really high end camera body by somebody, who cannot answer herself

The manual does not specifically tell you ever lens you can use, but Yes. Check page 351 for an example if that's what you need

Actually the question was about VR lenses, not DX.

VR works great on the D850. The D850 works with both Dx and Fx lenses. For Dx lenses, the D850 needs to be in Dx mode. There is a Nikon published preferred lens list for the D850. Because of its high resolution, lack of sharpness in a lens becomes very obvious. Obviously, no Dx lenses are on the list because it’s an Fx camera. I just sold a couple of lenses and purchased another. Sounds like the Best Buy salesperson did a good job of selling. Curious why a new camera was bought. The D7200 is a fine camera, so is the D850, but it requires excellent technique and decent lenses to take advantage of its capabilities.

There are DX VR lenses and FX VR lenses. You could use either on a D850, but you wouldn't get the full quality of the D850 using the DX ones, so if she has the DX ones, she would be well advised to get FX ones.

Yes, I researched my camera before I purchased it and have a few lenses.

She is a disabled vet who in my opinion got taken! If I had known her then I would have stopped this. So much for Best Buy-thanks for your help, I wanted to make sure of my facts before I said anything to her.

But that is the issue. It is not about VR (vibration reduction) it about lens type. DX lenses are built for DX size sensors which are smaller than Full Frame sensors. The DX lens throws a smaller circle of light than the Full frame lens, sometimes called FX lens. Using a DX lens on a full frame sensor will yield a circular bright area surrounded by a dark area called a vignette. Now the DX lens will physically fit on the D850 and the D850 even has a DX mode to eliminate Vignetteing. But you won’t get the full resolution of the full frame sensor using DX lenses.

She should plan to buy new lenses. A very economical sharp very good walk around lens is the Nikkor 50 mm f1.8D

Ken Rockwell has a good web page on Nikon lenses and Nikon camera compatibility. https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

You're preaching to the choir. All I did was point out the actual question.

Some credit cards back you up on returns
if the vendor is uncooperative.

Also, before landing on Best Buy with both
feet, do check out exactly WHICH lenses
she is using on her 7200. They MIGHT be
FX VR lenses suitable for the 850. While
odds are she's NOT that lucky, IF she IS so
lucky, it could be a very awkward scene at
the Returns Desk if she does already have
the suitable lenses. Nikon lenses are very
plainly marked "DX" or "FX", so do check !

One reason she MIGHT be so lucky is if she
got taken when buying the 7200 and they
sold her FX VR lenses just becuz they cost
more than DX VR lenses.

In the next room ATM is my sister's Canon
Rebel, an inexpensive "DX" size camera but
it has an "FX" size 50/1.4 on it, becuz some
salesman made some extra commission on
her that day.

I don't quite follow the thought that Best Buy has any responsibility to accept a return out of their stated policy.
