A friend of mine has a Nikon D850 when she bought it new the Best Buy clerk told her that her VR lenses from her D7200 could be used on it. I read the D850 Manual, and it does NOT list the VR lens for being used on the D850. My thinking is that she will have to buy new lenses for her D850. Anyone know for certain? Thanks

Look, it's Best Buy, right? Of course you can use Dx lenses with VR on a Nikon D850. What she won't get is the full frame benefits of the D850, as it will go into Dx crop mode. Simple. And, yes, to get the full magnificence of the D850, she will have to eventually upgrade to Fx lenses. I had a Sigma 18-35 which I used on a D7200, and when I got the D850, it worked just fine until I upgraded to a Nikkor 16-35.

If in the SHOOTING MENU under IMAGE AREA, the AUTO DX CROP is turned on.

I don't quite follow the thought that Best Buy has any
responsibility to accept a return out of their stated policy.

OK. But "stated policy" is not always engraved
in granite by atomic lasers !

I bought an open box special in the over $1000
category, with their corporate re-seal on the box
that stated nothing was missing. Since I did not
break the seal in the store but was already home
when I discovered things were missing, they had
to just take my word about that. No problem at
all. They provided what was missing.

Now if stated policy were harshly enforced, all
they were obliged to do is allow me to return a
purchase I was dissatisfied about, providing that
I returned it exactly "as sold". Since the seal had
said it was complete, and I presented it as being
incomplete, stated policy is "Not Returnable" !

Plus, I didn't wish to forego a great bargain on
a one-off open box special by returning it. What
I wanted was to be made whole. And I got that
with no muss no fuss.

Hardly a comparison. They did not lie or misrepresent anything and the product was not faulty or missing anything. If they choose to take it back, fine. The credit card company would likely back the store. Buyers remorse is hardly a reason for return. That's all I'm trying to convey.

Nikon lenses are very
plainly marked "DX" or "FX", so do check !

50% correct. Nikon DX lenses are marked DX on the lens.
Nikon FX lenses are not marked.
If it doesn't say DX, it's FX.

You're preaching to the choir. All I did was point out the actual question.

Sorry I did not mean to preach I was just trying to explain the differences. Why are these people all talking about refunds? She has a fine camera. She can sell her DX kit and buy some FF lenses and be very happy with it.

We don't even know if she has DX or FX lenses.

Original post says “clerk told her that her VR lenses from her D7200 could be used on it.” which implies DX lenses.

In fact DX lenses can be used on Nikon FX bodies but the clerk did not fully explain all the trads of that.

She is a disabled vet who in my opinion got taken! If I had known her then I would have stopped this. So much for Best Buy-thanks for your help, I wanted to make sure of my facts before I said anything to her.

What do you mean by she got taken? Are you implying that she was dragged into Best Buy by an employee and was told that she needs to purchase a D850?

It is obvious from your side of the story, that this person doesn’t need a D850, but I seriously doubt that your friend didn’t want one to begin with.

People who own DX cameras might have DX or FX lenses. You can't just assume that everyone with a DX camera only has DX lenses.

Fair enough. I did assume but I submit that the phrase “from her D7200” means the kit lenses she got when she bought the camera. I have yet to see a post disclaiming that.

I wouldn't assume that either. That's not the woman who owns the camera speaking, it's her friend, who may or may not know if they were kit lenses.

I think it’s all speculation at this point. But the points made are no less revelant, if she owns FX lense, she has affirmation they are good to use, if she owned DX lenses she has some decisions to make.
