Actually, this is smart. I thought I uploaded one of my cards because it was on my computer desk and had been there for a day or two so I put it in my camera and formatted it. Uhtt OhHH, I forgot and never got around to uploading on my computer. Luckily they weren't important to me. I just blew those pictures off.

After 35 years in IT, Backup, Backup, Backup is my mantra.I never reformat a card until I download it to my computer and run a backup. Actually, I backup everything to three different devices since I also backup work-related documents and my financial data as well. Then, and only then, do I reformat my SD and CF cards.

This is EXACTLY what is recommended and what I do. It would cost me about 150 per card not to re-use them as they are 128GB XQD cards!

I have the same SanDisk SD cards for my D50 since 2005. 512mb, 1gb and 2gb. I have 7 altogether, rotate them and ALWAYS format in camera.

I use Lexar Pro. On a couple of my older cards I was having issues, called Lexar and they was informed they have a lifetime warranty, just be sure to keep your receipts. Not only did they replace them, they upgraded them, because they didn't make my original cards anymore. Goodonya Lexar. (disclaimer: I don't work for Lexar or am I a pro).

Note that instead of merely deleting images on a memory card, format the card. This action in effect resets the card medium for a fresh start.

Even so, now and then, but rarely, the medium of the card may become corrupted. This result has happened to my memory card a couple of times since I took up digital photography in 2002. I formatted the card to restore it to good use.

Of course, if a given card fails again, discard it. You must do so to protect your captured images.

Others more experienced may offer advice as well.

does it affect the quality of the memory cards if you delete and re-use the same card? or is it better not to delete what is on the card and just use a new card?

Buying new cards can become a big expensive very quickly. Format in the camera and keep shooting. Ideally, use a camera that has two card slots, and let the second card backup the first.

Formatting the card in a camera does nothing more than rebuild the directory and some other metadata; it does nothing to most (almost all) of the card. If your card became corrupted it was just the directory that was hit. Reformating it just rebuilt the directory.

Someone here said that he did low-level formatting, in camera, on these cards, but he never did tell us which brand/model of camera allows that. You can easily do that type of formatting on a PC, if needed, then do a regular format in the camera.

I've been using various memory card formats since digital photography came about. ALL of my cards have been Lexar Professional, regardless of type. I've followed the process, recommended by most camera and card manufacturers, of formatting/erasing the card in the camera just before its use and not had one problem. (Hopefully, I didn't just jinx myself!). Formatting a card in your computer, low level formatting a card or wiping a card as one would do a disk, will, most likely render the card useless in the camera. An in-camera format (delete) should fix that! Best of luck.
