does it affect the quality of the memory cards if you delete and re-use the same card? or is it better not to delete what is on the card and just use a new card?

No, deleting and reusing memory cards is precisely what they are designed for - only after you've done it over 100,000 times might there be any issues.

It is generally better to format the card in-camera, and not merely delete files from it when connected to your computer.

Buying new cards can become a big expensive very quickly. Format in the camera and keep shooting. Ideally, use a camera that has two card slots, and let the second card backup the first.

What f8Lee says. Yes.
Last night I watched a video on YouTube about a camera that was found in puget sound. It was in the water for 3 years and the chip was not damaged.
They are tough.

Thanks for all the great replies. I usually reformat the card in camera before my next shooting adventure. It’s nice to know that quality is not an issue.

It is better to format the card, which removes any residues and preps the card toward that specific camera. Simply deleting images will leave some residue on the card, which will accumulate with time going on and that could lead to a card becoming corrupt over time. No you do not need to use a new card when its full! Many of my cards are 10 years old and have been re-used thousands of times and they perform as new!

I've been using the same memory cards for eight years now.
Formatted once in-camera when purchased;
And I delete the files via the computer.

Depending on the brand of the card, look for a utility which will look at the general health of the read/writes status of the card. It will tell you how many rights and reads there Have been and the general health of the card and how Long it might last

Format cards in Camera. I know some HedgeHoggers might disagree!

Always format in-camera, the camera software may add something that a computer would not.

This is EXACTLY what is recommended and what I do. It would cost me about 150 per card not to re-use them as they are 128GB XQD cards!
