Just received the new sony rx10m4. Went out to take a few pics to test things out....pushed the sd card into the mac to import to lightroom 5 and hey presto....files not recognised.
Im running mavericks. Ive searched the web and yes you can download the new version of adobe raw converter which converts the files to dng but not on mavericks..it wont work.
To cut a long story short Im going to have to upgrade to high sierra to be able to view the raw files and after having done tnat im going to have to subscribe to the adobe lightroom/photoshop package.Im not happy but tbere it is.
My question is...has anyone out there actually updated the mac operating system whereby you lose iphoto and gain Photos....was it seemless or am I going to be tearing out whats left of my hair, in the very near future?
Ahhh, but tis a joy to shoot JPEG ! ......
..
It's not the OS, it's Lightroom 5, which is an end of life application for Adobe, so no new camera RAW formats are supported. You need to find a converter to take your ARW files and convert them to DNGs, then you can open in Lightroom 5.
Problem is I cant find any raw converter which will recognise the rx10 files which is compatable with mavericks

First of all, Capture One Pro Sony version works on Mac OS X 10.11.6, but nothing older - so at the very least you'll need to upgrade your OS. Second, I am a Lightroom/Photoshop user, and I prefer the ease of editing and image quality that Capture One Pro provides with my RX10M4. Lightroom is just ok, but Capture One works magic with arw files. There were some issues with Capture One Pro and High Sierra, but I don't know if they have been resolved yet.
In any case, go to the Capture One Sony site:
https://www.phaseone.com/en/Download-Sony.aspxAnd download the software after upgrading your OS. I am pretty sure you'll get a good look at the ease with which you can produce some pretty outstanding results with the least amount of effort. I still use Lightroom to catalog all of my images, but I filter out the arw files from view in LR, and I filter "in" just the arw files in Capture One.
I have the RX10 IV - just purchased. Photoshop Classic CC and LR Classic CC do recognize the files. It's $10.99 a month for both, via Adobe subscription. Free - Faststone also can view and process the files.

Editing jpegs gives me a headache . . . Shooting them is just as joyful as raw, but once you get in front of the computer I have to really resist the urge to tear my hair out. But that's me.

Luminar will open and edit .ARW files easily.
The same thing happened to me when I bought the Sony a6500. The update went ok but with a few glitches. I had to get Photoshop cc and Lightroom. I never got Lightroom to work at all. I had Photoshop CS6. When I tried to quit CC it ruined CS6. Now I use CS6 and cc but can’t get Lightroom. I wish I never had to update. Good luck!
I have the SOny RX10m4 and use Luminar. It recognizes the Sony RAW files. I haven’t had to convert any files. Luminar cost $99 but sometimes runs specials to be $69. It may be worth a try.
Thanks for the advice....out of interest...iphoto still works great in high sierra so that problem is solved, and so strangely does lightroom 5 and photoshop 6 with the exception that they dont recognise the rx10m4 raw files.Anyway Im looking at the various options....cheers

I don`t know about you all but I seem to find the RX10M4 one of the best cameras I have ever used. Expensive not if you price out what you would have to spend to have the same or very close camera. I have felt so damn good that I wanted a back up....so I bought another RX10M4. For what I shoot wildlife sports and nature it has and still surprises me. I just damn well feel lucky. My son and myself are learning together. Good day and have fun
