Just received the new sony rx10m4. Went out to take a few pics to test things out....pushed the sd card into the mac to import to lightroom 5 and hey presto....files not recognised.
Im running mavericks. Ive searched the web and yes you can download the new version of adobe raw converter which converts the files to dng but not on mavericks..it wont work.
To cut a long story short Im going to have to upgrade to high sierra to be able to view the raw files and after having done tnat im going to have to subscribe to the adobe lightroom/photoshop package.Im not happy but tbere it is.
My question is...has anyone out there actually updated the mac operating system whereby you lose iphoto and gain Photos....was it seemless or am I going to be tearing out whats left of my hair, in the very near future?

You may be able to solve some of your problem by using LR to import your images (into the catalog) and use Capture One Pro Sony to do all of the processing on the images. I am on Windows, and I subscribe to Adobe CC for Photoshop and Lightroom, and found that the results I got with Adobe software pale to those that I get with Capture One.

Jpeg is always an option, and it will work since the RX10M4 does a decent job with jpegs, but if you really want to get the best out of your $1700 camera, you are on the right track. You are aware that the raw format on the Sony is 12 bit, not 14 bit.

I posted on another thread an analogy relating to jpeg and raw. Buying an expensive camera to shoot jpeg is like buying a Stradivarius violin and removing three strings. Yes, you can make music with the one string, but you can definitely make much better music when you use all four. Not to mention play more music that has notes lower and higher than the range of that one string.

You may want to stage your upgrades in this fashion.

Stop using iPhoto
If you haven't already, migrate your iPhoto libraries to your version of Lightroom
Upgrade the OS
Install LR CC
Open your LR5 catalog and you will be prompted to upgrade the catalog to the latest version of LR.

With Lightroom, maintaining dual libraries - one in OSX and the other in Lighroom is unnecessary. You can do anything you need to as far as file management goes in LR.

Well, things moved on since my original post. I bit the bullet downloaded high sierra, and to my surprise found that it would let me update iphoto so that it would work on the new operating system....the moral being, dont believe everything you read online. I also now have lightroom cc and the sony raw files can now be imported easily. I might give capture one a try but have always liked lightroom for editing but not for actually looking at photos in...I find the available screen size too small...thats why I like iphoto.
I always shoot in raw anyway .The raw files in the sony are a lot smaller than the files in the d810 and dont seem to me to be as responsive....ive saved photos that have come out completely underexposed...more or less black with the d810....I doubt the sony raw files could cope with that but Ill keep on experimenting.Ive found that the rx10m4 raw files are almost always spot on anyway....So far Ive had to do very little post processing.....that isnt the case with the d810....then again post processing is one of my favourite parts of photography.

I don`t know about you all but I seem to find the RX10M4 one of the best cameras I have ever used. Expensive not if you price out what you would have to spend to have the same or very close camera. I have felt so damn good that I wanted a back up....so I bought another RX10M4. For what I shoot wildlife sports and nature it has and still surprises me. I just damn well feel lucky. My son and myself are learning together. Good day and have fun
everyone

I feel that way too. The Wife & I will be going to Switzerland the first part of September.
I had originally planned to take my a99II with my 28-300 lens, but I have changed my mind now.
