I, too, use Photoshop Elements (14). I've used PSE for a number of years and I am very happy with it. There is a bit of a learning curve with it; I suggest getting Scott Kelby's "Photoshop Elements (put the Elements # you are using here) for Digital Photographers." It is a good starting point and much easier to follow than many of the "how to" books on the market.

Been using since version 1 on my first Windows computer, now on 15. It is more than adequate for most people. Each iteration adds more features from Photoshop. Have never seen the need for Lightroom as Elements has a perfectly workable organizer and I have no need for batch processing. I too recommend Scott Kelby's book for detailed editing and the Dummies book for the version you have as a reference.

I've always liked the 'evaluation' and comparison between Elements and "Full Blown Photoshop", that opines that Elements gives you 80% of the functionality of PS, at 20% of the cost. As others have pointed out, Elements is a great way to learn many of the basic techniques of PS and can give you a 'jump start' when...and IF, you decide to dig deeper....
