Do you find that they successfully recharge during rotation cycles. I found mine tended to stay discharged.

AzY, The two batteries, one Canon OEM and one knock off, both seem to hold a full charge (per the camera readings) for about a month, maybe a bit longer. I find that is long enough for a 'grab the camera and go' shot should I see something in the yard. We have a state conservation area behind us so I'm generally doing that a couple of times a month. When they seem to be losing the charge too quickly, I'll replace the weaker, and test the older more often.

My son was giving me some crap as I was sorting through my equipment. He noticed that I have all my camera batteries lettered. I have six, lettered A-F. When he asked me why I told him I use them in order, A through F as they run down and get recharged. So, for example, when D comes out of the camera, E goes in and D goes straight to the charger. He laughed at me and called me anal.

I just want to keep usage and charge cycles even across all the batteries.

Anyone else manage their batteries in a similar way? Or am I just weird?

I also number and rotate. Also add the year put into service. Only the newest ones used for high priority events where battery failure or early discharge is unacceptable.

It is anal, but I'm not knocking it. I'm a little anal too. I don't letter or number mine. But I do use a sharpie to write the year and camera it went to. I have batteries from 2010 that I used in my Canon 7D. But both of my current cameras, a 7D Mk II and 5D Mk IV, use those same batteries. So I have some with simply 2010 or 2011 on them and some with 7DMKII 2016 or 5DMKIII 2016 or 5DMKIV2017 etc. Since all these batteries weren't purchased at the same time, they have a different number of charges and a different amount of use over time. So when I am going on a critical shoot and want the best battery, I pick one with the newest date and make sure it's charged fully and then bring some of the others as backups.

Oh dear. Time to send this to the attic. Photography and politics don't really mix that well.

Check the cover of the recent Time Magazine. The cover is a picture.

Yes, it's anal. So, who ever said being anal is bad? The anal photographers come home with the images they want to capture. Others, they make excuses.

You don't believe that....do you????

I've numbered my memory cards when on a trip, but never the batteries. I guess that carrying 5 batteries makes them easy to keep track of when you only bring two cameras. But I like that idea. You learn something every day. Thanks!

Wait till your kid gets two dead ones. Then who is anal?
Don't give him the satisfaction of arguing. Let consequences teach!

If you want to freak out your son, switch to a hieroglyphic system - strange symbols, rather than letters. : )

Or barcodes. That ought to really do it to him!!

I have only two batteries (both inside a battery grip), but if I had more I'd adopt your system.

Sound right, not weird, but too many batteries. I have only two in use, one brand new in case one of them dead. So no letter, no number. It 's ok to be weird sometimes.

I keep at least 3 copies of all my pictures (5 actually). But nominally the original plus a backup and a backup offsite. So that's 3 (leave out the additional copies).
Camera batteries at least 4. There are some rules about a battery.
1. They do fail often with age. And not all batteries live to the same age.(I have seen them last 6 years and less than 1 year)
2. A battery will fail just when you didn't want it to. ( I know of at least 5 occurrences of this)
3. You might be surprised how often 2 ! batteries will fail at the same time. (I could give you innumerable examples)
4. Some photographers can be nowhere near a charger for days at a time. (Our longest was 6 days)
5. Sometimes you might surprise yourself just how many shots you might take in a day. ( My wife once took 4000)
6. You might be surprised how many photographers actual lose a battery(I know of at least 2 other photographers who have done this)
Just remember a single photographer is only a single example and is too low a number to place any sort of credence on.
I am sure there are more. 4 batteries should be a minimum. You need to know their history as far as you can.
If you only have two batteries then either you don't take many photographs at a time, you have been incredibly lucky, or don't travel much.
Similar things apply to SD (etc) cards.
I am picking that most UHHers have house insurance. So why don't you have insurance against batteries and SD cards failing (which is having enough of each in case stuff happens) ?
And a right bitch which does affect this discussion if you own a D850. Why did Nikon make a camera (D850) which won't take an EN-EL15 but instead requires you to buy EN-EL15a's ?

Darn good idea. After fully charging I can suggest where you can tell your son you will place it!
