Plus the heavy-handed policy is simply going to push the 2 sides farther apart. All of the fine photographers here at this site know the power of images, and there are surely going to be more photos and videos to come, evoking even more emotional reactions.

The point may be moot by tomorrow. There will be a vote on it, and it will pass. Children will stay with their parents.

Detentions and segregation of minors has been going on for many, many years. It went largely unnoticed under Dubya and Obama. But now that the Small Fingered Orange Vulgarian is President, its a good cause to blame him for and raise all kinds of hell.

Everybody on the left is howling at Trump's inhumanity. He is just enforcing the law that has been on the books for years.

It is an ugly situation. I doubt Trump likes the idea of separating two year olds and their mothers.

Instead of pointing at the problem and falsely screaming "Trump's Fault!" how about some ideas for a solution. I asked for solution ideas on another thread, and got not a single response. Well, a conservative put up some rational ideas, but the left just kept howling "inhuman."

What should we do with families crossing illegally?

This is not about asylum seekers...its about people slipping across the border and getting caught, with kids in tow.

I think we should establish some family housing for true asylum seekers. With as many as are coming over currently, it will likely be tent cities as they are processed. However, this will just encourage people to make asylum claims even if they are just coming over to look for a better economic life.

Adults crossing illegally are going to be detained, their kids are going into the system till the parents get due process.

What should we do with those kids?

Could some of you compassionate liberals offer some ideas instead of just bitching about the problem?

That's not exactly an unbiased source...

No, it is a zero-tolerance POLICY...

The Executive branch has the ability, if not the obligation, to use their discretion in matters such as this - - however, the way they did what they did in this case was an ugly, unnecessary choice, and that's the problem...

Today's plans are just as disgusting. President Trump is considering issuing an executive order to change his own policy. That would allow him to stick to his lie that the law forced the action. Paul Ryan is proposing a bill that would establish centers where families could be held together without being separated. That was former President Obama's solution, which worked just fine. Trump's brief meeting with Republican congressmen yesterday was just to urge them to act so he wouldn't have to, which would also preserve his lie that the law forced him to do it. Bush and Obama did not see that as a necessary way to enforce the law. Moreover, since the Trump administration didn't institute that policy until April of this year, that means that they didn't follow the law (the law according to Trump) for 15 months. In effect, Trump has admitted to disobeying the law, and should be impeached.

Well, we know that this is his pedestrian method to pressure lawmakers to give him that damned wall - - the kids and families are simply political footballs, and trump could care less about the outcome to their lives.

To the folks who keep saying that both Bush and Obama did it too, of course they used discretion in most cases, and since trump's zero tolerance POLICY implementation in April, the numbers are massively exponential, so there isn't any logical comparative equivalency.

I am watching the national news right now, awaiting an announcement from Trump that he is issuing an executive order TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM FORCED UPON HIM. I am expecting him to try to blame the whole thing on Obama somehow. We will see shortly.

The first step might be to allow asylum seekers to file for asylum. I understand that at the present this isn't happening.

That is what the zero tolerance policy was designed for. It allowed the government to ignore the asylum law, ans simply treat asylum seekers the same as if they sneaked across the border at night and got caught. Even though it only has about a 20% success rate, it did result in some brown skinned people being accepted into the country. Apparently, Trump did not like that.

I have watched the President's announcement. He made sure not to waste the airtime, and spent much of it bragging about his tax cuts and trade successes. No apologies offered to any of the affected families. He had been insisting that his hands were tied by the law. Today, he claims that he can fix it with his executive order. Either he lied all along, or he lied today. He is setting such a low standard, making me wonder what future political campaigns are going to be like. An honest person won't stand a chance if voters reward the liars.

Apologies are not necessary to those that attempt to enter the country illegally.

Of course: 50 YEARS; Bush and Obama in the past; Dems now at fault. Dems "want" open borders and crime...

Did he plan this all along ??? Geezzz, I'm sorry to be so cynical - - but had there not been a public outcry, he could have just gone with "business as usual" - - but now that there was backlash, he can issue an executive order intended to set aside his OWN policy ??? W-H-A-T ?????

Either way, HE believes HE comes out smelling like a rose - - well, I say, IN HIS MIND ONLY !!! I think this has a stench that will never wash off...
