Former Republican First Lady Laura Bush - - her opinion on separating immigrant children
If you cross the border illegally once and are caught, it's a misdemeanor. If you are caught a second time it's a felony. Should we lock the kids up with the accompanied adults then?
If this thread is indicative of what the United States of America is today, and I think it is, we have lost our purpose. There is no empathy, no regard for human rights.
We are solely blessed; and screw everyone who is less fortunate.
That attitude is not what made this country great; and is not what will ensure a good life for our Grandkids.
This is ugly.

Detained them for months and months in detention centers....adjudication of their requests should take only days, not months. Now I agree, if they want to stay together, then create family jails.
Here's the deal: if they are entering, requesting asylum, either accept them or reject them. Arresting those who aren't accepted and then separating families... that's what is disgusting. Just turn back those you don't accept. Simple.
Repeating your statements doesn't make them any more true than the first time. You need to ad links to real facts that can be verified.

So right. This vile decision has been made by the Trump administration, the ppl of the US will take a lot, but eventually they lose their stomach for following Trump's hate. I wonder whether he has the capacity to put himself, his grandchildren in their place? He doesn't hate this policy and if it were Obama's, we all know he'd do anything he could to get rid of it. He's lying again, how long will the American ppl defend this monster?

I support your view. Where is the American soul? Does it even still exist, or has it been co-opted by home-grown oligarchs... I can't even find the will to put a question mark to that last sentence.

It truly is disheartening.

The American soul is being buried slightly everyday. The lies and the hate emanating from DC is trying to pound that loving soul into the ground until it's nonexistent. We are living in dangerous times...
I thought God had saved us from the Bushes.
The solution is to build bigger holding facilities. Change the 20 day holding period making it longer to allow more processing time. Hold the so-called parents with their kids till they have their hearing. Incidentally, 80% of the hearings for asylum are proven frivilous.
Think about it, let's say you are a Canadian and are trying to sneak across the border to the U.S. with your kid. You are caught, and the U.S. says, now in this country, we have to separate you from your kid. Would you go along with that or would you say, OK, let me go back to Canada as long as I can be with my kid? .
Everybody has empathy. And we don't run a country on empathy, we run it on laws.

This isn't about empathy...
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Many of the families ARE trying to get in legally, using the asylum immigration law. They show up at the border requesting asylum, but are then treated like criminals. It is a real law.
https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/asylum-united-statesWhether they are actually ever granted asylum is another matter, but they are not breaking the law. On the contrary, they are trying to use the law to become American citizens legally. If you really value law, you should respect all of them.
Many of the families ARE trying to get in legally,... (

That's another topic, and can of worms..... those that just walk cross, are illegal...2 different ways of crossing.
