I have an iMac desktop dating back to 2011. I had to call AppleCare a couple of weeks ago because the new internet service provider did not know how to hook up my Mac to their modem!!! What a dolt. Anyway, the lady at AppleCare had me going in less than 2 mins. Never once said anything about an expiration date on my contract. I've called them a few times in the past for other issues and never a comment about a 2011 machine being out of date, etc. This is why I keep buying Apple products because of their support.

And have run into a problem I shoot both JPEG and RAW and in the past when it asked for an upload my photos it uploaded both files. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated Apple Care seems to be at a bit of a loss as well as myself.

I would do one of two things:
1. Stop shooting both raw and jpg
2. Download your raw images to a file on your desktop and import into Photos from there.

For the OP, number 2 is good except that it should be a FOLDER, not a FILE and a sub folder within the Pictures folder is more appropriate for several reasons. The images are files.

And just to forestall any technical arguments, I’m using the terms that are meant for users in normal support activities.

The OP problem appears to be that his computer “wants” to do the download WITH AN APP and he needs to use the OS natively until the app issue is resolved.

The solution, then, is in HOW to do that.

IMHO, however, number 1 is an unnecessary surrender unless you mean raw only; drop JPG.

I have an iMac and a MacBook Air. I am running the latest update (High Sierra10.13.5). I have a D7100 - one card captures jpeg the other raw. I have no issues uploading both jpeg and raw into photos. I see both jpeg and raw images next to each other in Photos. I have attaches two screenshots which may help. "Use Raw As Original" and "Import photos from a camera or IOS Device". To change device import settings the device (camera) needs to be connected and on - see the tip in the second screenshot. Jim

As I recall, Photos for Mac "stacks" the jpeg and RAW files. You only see one file (jpeg). If you click on one of your uploaded files and then hit the "i" (for Info) button, it will tell you if the original image is a jpeg or RAW file. Remember that the Mac cannot display RAW files - it displays the jpeg.

Since I just recently updated my iMac to High Sierra your post intrigued me. Have you resolved your issue? I also shoot RAW/JPEG but haven't done any editing since upgrading. When I inserted my SD card Photos only showed me one "New Photo" although I knew there were two file types. The small box in the corner of the photo indicates there are multiple file types, the "J" indicating Photos is using the JPEG file as the primary. I believe it is related to Apple's belief that you should store the larger RAW files in iCloud retaining only the smaller JPEGs locally.

The first attachment below shows the import window in Photos. I know it is a lousy picture, but that isn't the interest, it was meant only to show you the small box with a J.

The second is a clip from my Library window. When you double-click and open an image to edit, you can then choose to "Use RAW as Original". Thereafter the small box on the thumbnail will show an "R".

If you only import one file type there will be no indication of the file type. The bottom photo is actually a .CR2 RAW file.

I'm not sure what brand of camera that you are using but, Nikon (and probably Canon and others) have specific drivers to be loaded on Apple computers to enable the computer to be able to read the images in ANY program. On the Nikon USA website you would find specific drivers for Apple and other specific drivers for PC/Windows. Once these are loaded, you SHOULD be able to open any raw/nef file and view/edit it in any program... Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop can open / view these images (if I remember correctly) without the brand specific drivers but everything else will need or want it. One of the first things that I do when I set up a new computer is to go to the (in my case Nikon) website and download the raw/nef drivers.

Yes. You are correct on both points. My gout is hurting so bad today that it is clouding my thoughts. Shoot raw only and download to a folder. With LR , I always import from a folder and never the card. Thanks helping me out

I upload JPG and RAW on my iMac to a external hard drive and save them by date (today is 110613) and then keep that file, as back up, for ever. Then I take what I want from that drive to work on in the Mac. PS when done I save the final pictures on another external hard drive. Double protection (drives are cheep, just had to update and got a 8TB fo $125.00) I got gun shy when I lost a drive a few years ago.

Hmmm... I have been shooting raw from Nikon & Canon for almost 5 years now, also been using an iMac for about 7 or more years, started with iPhoto’s then Aperture, then moved to Lightroom.

Have NEVER loaded a “driver” from Nikon or Canon to enable raw viewing or processing since OS X has a raw decoder engine built into the operating system from Apple.

What drivers do you mean from Canon and Nikon?

I use the Canon supplied EOS utility software, with latest version of Mac, no problems with RAW files.

I had a similar problem with the built-in card reader of my iMac. I only shoot RAW & one day, LR couldn’t find it. I don’t remember what version OS I was using at the time.

My solution? I started using an external card reader instead and everything is fine now. I’m not happy that I have to use one of the USB ports for this, since there’s only four!

I never thought to call Apple Care; but, if it’s the BUILT-IN card reader that is failing, they certainly should be able to help. Call them again and ask for a manager. I’m curious about the answer.

Likewise, I have never done that either

I understood your original post. I have heard from many professionals that they shoot only raw and put the photos in a folder they created in their desired location. THEN they import them into the software of their choice. Would this eliminate the OP’s problem?

This is a little off-topic:
I have always let Lightroom Import my photos from the card and I check the box to save a duplicate set to my external drive. I’ve always wondered why everyone doesn’t do this. I check the destination so I know where my photos are going, too. I love that I can rename my photos and LR puts them in a dated folder. All of this at once! Simple

High Sierra has caused many glitches and many things no longer work. I wish I had never installed it.
