I think time is a good measure of an image. And lets call all photos images that takes the judgemental terms out of the picture. I take a lot of images while traveling. About once a month I look back at my images and delete those that don't stand the test of time. Any image that survives three looks I keep. Great images retain their appeal over a long period of time

Your method is similar to what I do. When I was shooting weddings, I would worry so much about the images I took that I finally decided to dump them into a folder and not look at them for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I was able to look at the images in a new light and I discovered that they were not as bad as I had originally thought. I still use that method and like you, if they still look good after 3 looks, I keep them.

The explanations given so far are pretty good ones..A snapshot to me is something I capture with the first thing at hand, as quickly as I can, just to record the moment.
Although I might use the term interchangeably, a photograph has been given loving care to bring out the best of what the image portrays but the content may not be universally interesting..like a spontaneous picture of a grandchild may be wonderful to its parents and grandparents but lack the general interest of another that might be anyone's child in a composed one.

A photograph as Art would be one where the subject matter and composition would be compelling enough to hang on a wall if its content interests the viewer.

Janice, the longer one studies their craft the better they will become at it. On this very forum there is talk of making a new catagory for photos because of the range of photographers on it. It is painfully clear to very proficient photographers what is good and what is bad. And it will not have much to do with subject matter or the amount of PS used. Also it would be very difficult for anybody to tell the differance between really good snapshots and really lousy Photographs. So I guess the real question is really just how much overlap is there between the two.

Interesting question because I used this distinction in the
film days before someone invented “images”. To me a
snapshot was a photo not worth printing…. or deleting
these days during edit. There are photographs and then
there are really great photographs!

When my son was in little league, I desperately wanted a shot of him hitting the pitched ball. This was during the days of only film cameras. I'd go to the game with a roll of 400 ISO, 36 exposure film in the camera in the camera. I'd wait until he had at least 2 strikes knowing he'd have to protect the plate and take a burst hoping he'd swing and make contact. I don't know how many hundreds of shots I took but never gave up.
Finally got the perfect picture, all of the kids eyes were on the ball (my son's, the catcher's and the umpire's), the ball clearly coming off of the bat, Dave's stance. the catcher's stance were all perfect. Snapshot or photograph? Who cares, I got the shot! I was happy and that's all that matters!

I think this is true. I was basically trying to get a feel of what one would mean if they told me my image was just a snapshot.
