I'm a dyed in the wool Nikon shooter but I tried most of the other brands. Past Olympus and Panasonic use has wet my appetite for some of the features of ML, which I won't go into now. I'd be using one now if it wasn't for the excellent Nikon IQ and my selection of F mount lenses.

I have been patiently waiting for a ML Nikon and got excited about the news of an upcoming Nikon ML camera...but then reality set in. I have the greatest respect for Nikon engineering but what is the likelihood of knocking it out of the park with their first FF ML release...not very likely. After all Canon with all its resources hasn't done such a great job with their ML attempt.

Sony is a huge company with far more resources than Nikon. They have made phonemical progress in recent years and currently are the undisputed leaders in 35mm FF ML cameras. Sony's A7 III, A7RIII and A9 are game changers...and based on past performance they won't be resting on their laurels.

I've been looking at recent reviews of Nikon to Sony smart adaptors and though not without short comings they seem to work. So I have decided to stick my toe in the ML water and ordered an adaptor along with a A6300 camera. I chose this camera partially because of cost with lens so if the adaptor doesn't work out I can still use the combination as a pocket camera.

If this works out I will be gradually making the transition.

Mirrorless is Probably the future, but I'm holding on to my Canons until the weight becomes a problem, when and if I need to lighten the load I'll have to do the comparison then, things change too fast to keep up with something that is that far in the future, I Hope!

I don't foresee myself going ML, my current camera is as compact and light enough for me (almost to small for me, going to add a grip soon). I've got nice batch of lenses so why change. Now if current camera dies sometime down the line and Canon has a decent ML that takes my EF lenses I would change.

You are absolutely correct. The majority of the cameras made in the near future will be mirrorless. You are also right on with Nikon and Canon in regard to mirrorless, both companies did not pay attention while mirrorless was in its development. I agree with you that the new mirrorless camera promised by Nikon could have its issues or I would be the first one surprised if it does not. Eventually Nikon mirrorless will be at a par with other mirrorless cameras.
Yes, Sony right now dominates the full frame mirrorless arena, if you call "full frame" the area covered by a sensor with the size of a 35mm film negative. Any camera using the whole sensor is supposed to be full frame and in that respect Olympus, when shot at the 4:3 ratio uses the whole sensor. APS sensor size like those in the D7200 or the D500 just to mention two of them (same thing with Canon and Pentax) are also full frame because the image covers the entire sensor.
In my case I prefer to use lenses made for mirrorless cameras, not adapters but that is me.

Up until yesterday I was half mirrorless, in that I had a Nikon D500 DSLR system and an Olympus EM1 mark II mirrorless sytem. I used them side by side and during the past fortnight I was out walking around with them for 7 hours a day. Unfortunately, the weight of the cameras, plus a combination of Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6, Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro and Olympus 300mm f4 was causing problems in my right hip and upper back. The last mile back to my car each day was not pleasant.

Reluctantly, I decided to sell my Nikon kit and buy another EM1.2 and Oly 60mm f2.8 macro. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount London Camera Exchange offered me, so got a price on my Olympus kit aswell. The overall value meant that I walked out of the shop sans Nikon and Olympus but carrying a Sony A7III + Sony 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6 G and Sony 90mm f2.8 G macro. Not only did no money change hands, but in 30 days Sony give me £180 cash back.

Why change from Olympus to Sony, I hear you cry. Well, there are no hides/blinds anywhere near where I live and much of where I walk is surrounded by trees and therefore low light, so I thought I would try a full frame camera for cleaner images at higher ISO. So now I am fully mirrorless. Went out walking today with said Sony kit and no hip or back ache. Works for me.

im not to sure that Nikon, and i only talk about nikon as i don't have interest in canon, will use the fated F mount as distance between rear element is different from DLSR and ML. My fear will be that all of my F mount glass will be become useless with out an adapter, therefore new glass will be required! to that i am a heave olympus user and only am using nikon for HS sports with lower light poor lighting at night. Ive entered with Sony A9, i needed a silent camera for indoor concerts D5 not at all quite. Im in the process of selling my nikon glass as i also have fear that after ML nikon hits the market PPL will need ML nikkor glass and the nikon used market will be flooded driving down F mount prices.

I just bought the Sony a6000 this week and absolutely in love with it. I have an older Sony a33 with 2 Sigma lenses that I am waiting for the adapter to arrive but in the meantime, the kit lenses are actually pretty decent. I also shoot with a Nikon D3300 and have quite a few lenses for that but not sure I'll consider an adapter at this time. I enjoy both but the Sony has always been my first love. Enjoy your new a6300.

I now have an A6500 from a D7200 - which mount did you go with? BTW, I find the Sony image is very sharp but compared to the Nikon image is like comparing a CD to a vinyl recording - both are great but different in nuance.

Nikon already stated that the F mount will not be usable without an adapter. They also registered a patent on an adapter. So, why would your lenses be useless? The sky is not falling. You should not live in fear.

Thanks, yes its been awhile hasn't it.

My A6300 kit and Fotoiox smart adaptor Mk II came yesterday, I was so exited I drove to Fedex and picked it up instead of waiting till Monday.

This camera is incredibly small but surprisingly heavy but still much lighter than my Nikons. It feels like brick. It took several hours to get comfortable with the menu and to set it up to my preferences. It came with a 16-50 power zoom lens. I wasn't expecting much from the lens but it surprised me. I really like this camera.

The adaptor was a different story. I tried 2 Sigma art lenses and they work really well. Focus was fast and accurate. Next was a Nikon AF-P lens. It wouldn't focus at all. Then I tried 2 Tamron lenses and both did the same thing...sometimes they focused accurate and fast in good light; sometimes they didn't. In poor light they would hunt continuously just like the Nikon AF-P. I didn't go further. So much for adaptors.

I'm sending the adaptor back and keeping the camera kit.

I fully expect that if and when Nikon produces a F-mount adaptor it will be completely compatible with their lenses. However, I'm not so sure about 3rd party lenses. They have no incentive to have them work. We shall see.

Nikon and Canon have shown about 0 interest in mirrorless cameras. Now they are playing catch up. Nikon is a year away if not more from shipping a product to stores. There is almost nothing known about their plans, i.e,. will existing lenses mount or will new lenses be required?

In the meantime the completion is stiff and their mirrorless competitors keep getting better and gaining market share.

Sharpshooter well said. You need the better focusing systems and the pro size and presence for your work.
Their is still a stigma to smaller camera's in business. You are going to shoot my job with that small camera?
I was a guest at a fashion shoot this week with an excellent lady that has a studio. She had Canon's with all
the lens and a lot of pro lighting. She does portraits mostly and she is a great lighting photographer.
I shot some video for her production with my Sony a7s II mirrorless and a 35mm cine lens as the fly on the wall.
I could not see her business using a mirrorless setup with its small presence. I think that these kind of store studios
are battling pricing and the expense of the gear this lady has. And how to charge appropriately.
When I make a few bucks it is usually with my medium sized Sony pro camcorder XDCam. I find it much easier to
work with then the 35mm camera format. Yet is a gem looks like classic camcorder but half the size.
Small has its benefits. I was able to video/photo Art Basil in Miami with my Sony RX10 III bridge camera
and no-one bothered me. For documentary work mirrorless is outstanding. Still like the Canon pro setup.

Eventually yes ML is the way to go, but I am not in any hurry. As time goes on tech gets better. I am waiting to see what Nikon has to offer with their Z mount system and how they will work with current F lenses. Otherwise I am liking the OM-D system more and more. They all have their merits, Sony/Fuji/Panasonic too, but those are the directions I am leaning towards in 2-5 years.

That’s probably the best metaphor re image quality I’ve come across!
