No version of Picasa has ever had a true RAW convertor built in. Try just opening one of your Jpeg shots in Picasa, presuming you do still value Jpeg as usable.

So just to beat the horse that died back on page 1, lol: Google stopped updating Picasa several years ago. For those with cameras that came out prior, the software can be adequate for raw editing, but it's still awfully limited.

Of course strong proponents of Photoshop probably feel that way about all other software, whereas I, a happy user of PS Elements for several years now, think that software is A-OK

Linda, Have you considered adding Luminar as an Elements plug in? I read an article a few days ago that indicated it really complimented Elements as to some of its features, etc. I have used Elements some, no expert on it, and have no experience with Luminar but it gets great reviews, etc. Sure sounds to me like it would be a great combo...just wondering about your thoughts. I read so much that indicates it takes years to learn Photoshop.........and Lightroom, while great for what it can do lacks features Adobe intentionally left out so Photoshop would be needed in special situations. Many of the photographer's tools in Photoshop are in Elements, looks like it contains most of the ones most folks use.....not sure I am correct here, but I am interested in quality but quick post processing rather than spending more time doing that than using the Camera. I would appreciate your thoughts! Tom

I'm not familiar with Luminar, Tom, but will check it out. I have been using Nik Collection plug-in for several years (since back when you actually had to buy it, lol) and truly love that. I also started right out with Topaz Simplify thanks to UHH buddy Treepusher

My biggest challenge with Elements was learning how to use layers and layer masks. That has enabled me to have much more control, so I'm super-happy I stuck with it. But since that hurdle, I've grown a little lazy about expanding my knowledge of the software.

I have elements 10 Linda. I recently read up on elements 18 and it appears to me that the software has come miles and miles since the version that I have. Based on what I read and based on your testimony I believe that I am going to use my right as an Elements user to upgrade to elements 18 as I have moved away from Picasa. Will consider plugins after becoming more knowledgeable of Elements 18.

That is entirely normal. Picasa does not do any rendering/enhancement of RAW files as opposed to LR & Photoshop which do some minimal adjustments on import. Picasa is obsolete and not supported by Google. It is not the best choice for any photo post processing. I do like the way it organizes your photos though, much better than Google Photos (IMHO), but I have switched to LR & PS.

When I first started shooting digital eight years ago I started with Picasa. I don't know if its improved since then, but as my skills increased I found that it was OK for beginners. eventually I needed a photo processing system that was more sophisticated.

I use to use Picasa to view my files but Find Faststone Image Viewer more better and shows RAW and a little bit of editing. Best of all. Free!!!!!!!!! I also use it as the Default to open all my JPG and Raw files. A bit about it here.

Thanks for recommending Faststone Image Viewer. I downloaded it this morning and have been playing with it all afternoon and I really like it. Great program, easy to use, and the price is right. After playing with it and getting familiar with the settings I deleted Picasa 3 off of 3 computers. Good riddance. I never felt comfortable with that program at all. Glad to see it go. Thanks again.

I too have Picasa 3 carefully downloaded to avoid junk. Yes, Picasa can't read RAW files so I shoot both RAW and JPEG. Lightroom will export images as JPEGs so that's another way to do it.

You'll find Picasa bundled with junk software on variuos sites if you just use Google and don't pay attention. Look for the plain application.

Hi all,
I have just downloaded Picasa 3 to my computer. Upon uploading a set of pictures, I noticed that they look washed out and the color isn't right. I have tried messing with just about everything picasa has to offer, and I can't get them to look anything like they do when viewing them in my camera. They were all shot in RAW, could it be that Picasa 3 doesn't process RAW photos? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Eric.

There are many free photo editors that are better and almost as easy to use than Picasa. Faststone and Pixlr are just 2. Gimp is another, but more difficult than the others mentioned, As a result I no longer use picasa
