something with wider straps or one on wheels (small suitcase type with 'shaped' foam insert to minimise vibration).

Or ....Plan ahead and give him less to carry!

Two lens bags, one for each shoulder, with the lenses equally distributed between the two bags.
I've done this on a hiking trip carrying two cameras, and it worked great.

We have had great luck with the pricey Billingham bags. Four point attachment to the strap distributes weight evenly, the body has a little flex to conform to the hip, and the wide pad is very comfortable. They will last a lifetime, and if you're not too concerned with a little surface wear, they can be fairly affordable used.

This is just one example. If you take your current lens bag to a golf or sporting goods store you may find similar options to better accommodate your bag. These straps are designed to distribute the weight onto both shoulders. Good luck!

My first suggestion, without knowing what system you use, is like many of the others: a backpack / frontpack. My second suggestion is to widen the camera bag strap and distribute the weight over a larger area. The third suggestion is based on your having a FF or APS-C camera: sell all that equipment and buy 4/3rds (obviously both the worst and hardest solution, but your husband will thank you).

I have a Ruggard Backpack. It is nice because it has adjustable areas (Velcro walled dividers) for camera, lenses etc in the main storage area. It has a secondary large pocket for some accessories.. a couple of battery size pockets on the side, and another fairly large zippered area on front for pens, sd cards, business cards, and other general stuff. I also has a stashed rain cover that is stored in the back near the straps that can be pulled out when needed. There is also a couple of straps on the bottom for securing a tripod. The backpack is nicely padded and easily accessed while on the ground or table but difficult when wearing it. Personally, I use it to carry my gear but lay it down (open) for shooting, as it gives me easy access. I also have one of my old US Military jungle fatigue shirts with a plethora of pockets, that I carry one or two lenses in while shooting. This gives easy access to the lenses and then I place everything but the camera and my current lens and maybe a secondary lens back into the backpack for hiking or travel. The system works for well for me.. but it has also become habit.

Whip him a bit harder and tell him to quit moaning - or look at Think Tank. Others out there, but I've experience with this brand and find it very comfortable - so much so that I rarely use the hip strap.

I have two bags I wear at the same time, cross-body. They have metal d-rings for the shoulder strap and metal d-rings for an additional waist strap. I found a waist strap on ebay for 7 bucks. The bags sell for $50 all day, though on sale for $80. Google Canon 200DG.
