Here's an area near Quang Ngai in Vietnam we used to call VC valley. Fixed wing wouldn't be much use here. Maybe not even the Osprey? The foliage in the top of the trees was so thick with vine, etc. that if you had an engine failure and autorotated to the top of the trees it is unlikely the chopper would have fell to the ground. We used to hate flying over that area. Only way out would maybe have been by chopper if they could find a place to land for pickup other wise walk. Needless to say a great hiding place for the Viet Cong.

While I didn't have the dubious pleasure of working that area, there were a number of like areas in III corps where I was. Flying over that stuff always made you tighten up a bit, if you get my drift. The jungle area east of Xuan Loc was pretty much like that, and I spent a lot of time flying over that stuff. Same with the Parrot's Beak on the Saigon River, to east of Cu Chi.

Well, I did. Flying an OH-6A and went down. I still don't know if it was a mechanical problem, like they said, or I was shot down. All I know is that there is a distinctive sound make when bullets his sheet metal. And when you lose that back couple feet of your tail, your day just got bad. I think hitting the thick jungle canopy was why I wasn't hurt. The bird sure didn't make out very well, though.

Ouch, the only good thing about that was that you survived. Bye the looks of things very lucky at that.

Well, it certainly did ruin my whole day. I don't recommend it. I have to credit the design of the airframe for providing for a lot of survivability.

I tried being a spray pilot one time. Was told there were no wires anywhere near the field I was to spray. Even made a pass over it and didn't see any until I was actually making a spray run. Damn near hit the thing. I decided that wasn't for me and quit that day. I give a lot of credit to anyone who does that dangerous job.

Thanks, but I loved every minute. Unfortunately, 8 bypasss told me to git! Was lucky enough to fly for several great companies with great guys. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Ever hear Stephen Stills do "Treetop Flyer"?
