Pilots who served during Nam. They were hated by some Americans. As for where most who served during that time.

Don't know; wasn't around for Pony Express. Huey's saved my butt a couple of times.

Wow! $25 a week in 1860 was like a kings ransom! That’s what my Dad was making in auto parts sales back in 1952, 90 years later. Of course he wasn’t risking his life daily either.

I’d say the Huey drivers in Vietnam had a bigger impact - I doubt the Pony Express saved very many lives, if any.

Having been one of those that answered that Army recuiter's poster back in 1967, I'd concur that the helicopter pilots risked more, with more responsibilty than the Pony Express. Not to diminish the Pony Express, but they had only themselves, their horse and some letters to look out for. We, as helicopter pilots had many other lives to care for. All for around $600.00 a month if I recall correctly.

And you were flying those inherently dangerous things called "fling wings". More power to you. Personally, I'll stick with flying fixed wing. :-)

I do both, but prefer helicopters.

Those fling wings sure did save a lot of lives.

Flying helicopters takes a certain amount of trust in your crew and maintenance people. I was fortunate that the crews I worked with in Vietnam were top notch. As a civilian pilot, I also had very reliable people maintaining and working on the helicopters. Still, there is some degree of comfort knowing that there are way fewer moving parts to go wrong in a fixed wing airplane. I like both.

Here's an area near Quang Ngai in Vietnam we used to call VC valley. Fixed wing wouldn't be much use here. Maybe not even the Osprey? The foliage in the top of the trees was so thick with vine, etc. that if you had an engine failure and autorotated to the top of the trees it is unlikely the chopper would have fell to the ground. We used to hate flying over that area. Only way out would maybe have been by chopper if they could find a place to land for pickup other wise walk. Needless to say a great hiding place for the Viet Cong.
