I'll never understand why someone would go back and drag out a played out thread like this and then make the same comment that has already been made for several pages.

New member, just saw the thread, not familiar with UHH "best practices" of reading ALL the posts in a thread to avoid repetition... give the guy a break.

DRHall, welcome to UHH. Don't feel bad... there are lots of folks who read the original post and offer a reply without noticing that the same answer was perhaps further down on the first page, or buried somewhere in the ensuing pages. It is annoying to many.

It would cost more money, effort, and time to produce a square or rectangular lense. One would have to take the round lenses elements of today's lenses and cut them square or rectangular. That, in and of itself, would cost more. Then to mount that element would require a much more complexly milled mount for the element. None of the elements could rotate. And these are just the starters for all that extra cost, effort, and time. Much easier, cheaper, and quicker to crop a square or rectangular out of the round image circle.

Lenses are round because the sun is. And the light the lenses capture comes from the sun.

Man are you stretching this one. But I like it, even if it did hurt.

"In the beginning" Lenses were made by grinding the glass and the back and forth motion while working their way around produced, almost by default, a round lens, leading the makers to start with a round piece. Why they are still round? YGIAGAM

The answer is very simple. People like rectangular images. Lenses must be cylindrical because of physics - light would bounce off flat edges, creating funky design issues.
