If sensors are rectangular or square, why aren't lenses? One of those questions that pop into your head as you are trying to fall asleep at night.

It's harder to make round picture frames.

The question is why aren't lenses rectangular? I don't know but I think even with rectangular lens the image formed by the lens is still a circle.

Who says they're not? Ever looked inside one?

Just a guess here, but I think you can fit more digital info on a rectangle or square than a circle (pixels are rectangles/almost square). Or maybe because film was rectangular.

Our eyes are round so maybe lenses were designed duplicate the shape of eyes.

The front lens of this camera is rectangular, but the rest inside are still round, otherwise, the body of the lens will be square or rectangular, then it will create a problem for zooming and focusing with "square/rectangular" ring.

Because then we would have the “rectangle of confusion”...and circle sounds so much better.

Here’s another puzzler: “Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?”

I would think the difficulty would be in grinding a square lens. However, the reverse question might be why sensors are rectangular? In film days it was certainly understandable because 35mm film was actually one long piece of film and not 36 individual pieces of 36 x 24 mm pieces of film pieced together. However, I have no idea why digital sensors cannot be made round like the image that is projected onto them.

I can see why sensor or film are not round (although both are possible to make) because people generally don't want round images.

Actually, the lens cover is rectangular, the lens that is visible behind it is round. It would be much harder to make a rectangular lens. And who wants a round photo?

Don’t let it pop into your mind on the eve of the big dirt nap, you will certainly be in h*ll for an eternity!!! LoL
I can only imagine how hard it is to grind and Polish an aspherical lens, and you want them to make square ones??? Maybe just cut box the corners!!! LoL
Even just focusing will be a lumpy affaire but the lenses would surely be lighter!!!
