For snapshootimg without pre-planning, I like my 35mm F1.8 on my D7000 because it approximates my eye's field of view and forces me into a more disciplined approach from the get-go. Plus it's a good low light lens.

When ever I do out, I always carry a P&S with me only for stand by for anything comes out, but if is is a special planned outing for photography, I will only bring what lens/lenses I need for the taste. I don't have so called "go to lens".

It all depends on the kind of subjects to be photographed. My go to lens with the DX format is the Nikon 18-200 VR. It is 28-105 AF-D with my FX camera.
Lately companies like Tamron have introduced lenses like the 18-300 and 18-400. Although you should not expect quality throughout all the focal lengths due to optical compromises those lenses are pretty good as walk around lenses.

Interesting. I use my Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM on my crop sensor Canon 7D Mark II very often when I'm out and about for exactly the same reasons. I find that limited to a single focal length forces me to look at potential subjects differently and as a result I capture images that might never had occurred to me if I had the flexibility of a zoom lens.

Have you considered a mirrorless camera? Could be significantly lighter than average DSLR.

On my 7d mk ii I usually walk around with my sigma 70-300 with built in macro or the 70-200.
