I cant carry everything with me all the time so what would you carry as a lens for a go to lens ...
Depends on where and what I anticipate shooting. On longer hikes with variations I carry a small backpack with some essentials and another lens.
If I don't know or care, I'll use an 18-longer length or a 70-200.

The lens I use the most is a 50mm f/1.8, but as DaveO says it depends on where I'm going and what I'm looking to photograph.
I recently purchased a 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens which will probably get a lot of work.

My go to is an 18-200 VR for walking around.
I carry an 18-250 if I am unable to carry any other lenses. Otherwise I carry a 100-400 with the 18-250. Those two lenses cover about 95% of my shooting unless i'm out shooting macro.
My walk around is an 18-200 Sigma.
Little bit wide (APS-C -equiv. of 27) and allows in-camera cropping.

It would help if you let us know what camera you are using.
Gee,it must almost be time for another discussion on crop factor.

Like others have said, it depends where I'm going and what I intend to shoot. If I'm going to be mostly outside in good light I will probably use my Canon EF-s 15-85mm as a general purpose walkaround lens. I also very often go out with nothing but my Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM. My camera is a Canon 7D Mark II.

I use a 28-300mm. Tamron now has an 18-400mm.
Wife loves the Tamron 18-400 on a D7100.
If my wife had a fine set-up like that, SHE'D be my walk-around!
My most used lens for just walking around is a 24-105 f4 Canon. It is a good medium wide angle and medium tele and at 85 to 100 a good portrait lens. A comparable lens on Nikon would be 18-120. On a crop frame I would go with the 18-135 Canon or Nikon 18-140.
