Just a suggestion, but if you take your dlsr, do not take the "steal me" (logo) strap and put gaffers tape over the make and model on the front. No need to advertise.

The safes in the rooms aren't usually big enough for your camera equipment but most hotels have safes at the front desk that you can't put your equipment in as long as its just a camera and a couple of lenses

I would take both. The waterproof for when you are soaking up sun & drinks, and your big camera for when you are sightseeing. I think if you don't take the big camera, you will be sorry :(

Depending on what you want to spend, a PS camera can be a great investment that will be a constant companion for a back-up or go to camera in many situations. Olympus Tough Shoot line is a good choice, made to be very durable and is waterproof. There are several models in the line, starting at around 300.00. We have an Olympus that goes to the beach with us, on the boat when fishing and is a handy back-up stuck in a pocket for the just in case when dragging a camera bag of equipment seems out of the question.

My wife and I are going back to Jamaica the end of August as well. I have a D7000 and it will be staying home along with all my lensees. I will carry my Canon G11 though. A small light camera is all you really need. If you were going on a photo shoot, then definitely take the bigger camera, but if your wife is like mine, she wants to relax and have some memories when she comes home and the P&S Camera does it all. (also shoots video which I used when we went bobsledding down the mountain in Ocho Rios and on the Chairlift on the way up so I could show everyone the white knuckle transfer that was made with my wife. Had an awesome time even though my wife was scared to death) Enjoy

Ok, folks....I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions.
The decision has been made...and not by me.
Wife: "Not just no....HELL No!"
Me: "ok"
Might not be the wisest decision as far as photography....but probably is to have a happy marriage and vacation :-D
I'll be looking for a waterproof P&S, I guess.

54 years! Good for you, Harvey.
My parents have been married for 59. I learned quite a bit from them. Most importantly, keep the wife happy.
I'd hate for her to get mad at me and.....Lord forbid...she make me get up and get my own Beer!!

My vacations to Hawaii included days for shooting and days for the beach and days for snorkeling. Don't miss snorkeling in Jamaica. Days for shooting (Mamiya RZ) won some awards. You can't snorkel and get great shots without underwater lights. Fun at the beach days (P&S) are sandy, windy and messy for your camera.

We plan on snorkeling while there. It's included in the package. It's a "Sandals" resort...all inclusive. Our Daughter & Son in law have been there a few times. I understand that we'll have lots to do (and drink!)

Just make sure that it's a good trade off, Cheryl.
She asks me if I want another beer....I say "ok dear"
Hard to say no to that!!

All we got's dancin' feet and a no worry P&S treat.

Leave your DSLR worries behind
Paint your P&S to look like the disp kind
'Cause rain, shine don't mind that P&S is water proof kind

Great lyrics, dpullum.

I imagine that I'll have some regrets, Crazycameralady.
But I look at it this way...at least I'll get a new P&S out of the deal!

I have never regretted having my camera with me, but I have often regretted leaving it at home. I have a waterproof fanny pack that I put my camera in when I'm on canoe trips and it works perfectly. The camera is protected from sand, dirt and water until I'm ready to use it, afterwards it goes right back into the fanny pack. The fanny pack is bright orange and everyone on the trip knows what is in it. Never had a mishap - yet. If you are used to shooting with a DSLR, you may be disappointed with the performance of a P&S (particularly shutter lag).
