Finish the phrase....Can't afford to buy a nikon 'cause I can't afford to replace it one year later.

I have had five Nikon cameras over a period of about thirty years. One pro (D3) and four high-end prosumers. I have never had a failure, and three of the bodies have gone well past the nominal shutter actuations. I am absolutely certain that there are Canon owners with the same story. So in my view the notion that this, or any other forum, reflects the durability or build quality of the equipment discussed is a non starter. The reasons people post comments are myriad.

If Canon is so inferior or behind others in technology, why aren't there lots of Canon items being offered for sale or trade so the poster can upgrade? No, they are probably happy with their equipment's quality and that would also explain why professionals at sports and other events are heavily tilted toward Canon. Those pros make a living at photography and would not make-do with inferior technology. If other brand owners have superior equipment why are they selling and trading? Back to my original question.... why are few Canon items being sold and Nikon has a higher percentage of those posts even though there are more Canon cameras in use? I wasn't trying to create a quality debate but rather to ask if Canon owners are simply more satisfied.

The Canon Nikon debate will go on forever. Myself I would take ether one if someone was willing to give me one. I am using Nikon only because that's what Ive been using for years. I find no reason to switch. If I owned a Canon I would be saying the same thing. Both cameras are about the same. Canon lens seem to focus faster than Nikon. I guess that's why you see most sports photographers using Canons. Pros. that are working for a company that supplies the cameras are happy to use what ever they give them. National GEO has a stock of cameras and lens at the disposal for their photographers to use.

I think like others have said it's the old chevy ford debate. I can say I have only bought canon products because I bought a canon a-1 and ae-1 in the late 70's that were second rate for whatever reason. I do kinda remember that the Nikons were more expensive at the time. I still remember dropping my canon a-1 onto concreate and the top of the camera had a crack on it. I was devastated and though it was toast. The camera was ok and still have the a-1 and ae-1 and they both work as new as well as the lenses. All in all I am sure either brand is good it all depends on what each person likes or dislikes. Going forward I think the mirroless cameras shall rule and the dslr although older technology will still be here in the future (hey I still have 33RPM records - this being a different topic). I am really watching the mirrorless technology and Sony has my eye right now but will wait to see what canon does in the FF mirroless camera design. But all that really matters is whatever brand you have makes you happy and do not forget all that matters is that perfect photo that either a Canon or Nikon can shoot.

Satisfied or Stuck with their Canon equipment?

DSLR technology is struggling to increase performance. Canon camera technology is significantly behind Nikon with regards to dynamic range and high ISO performance. Canon also is behind on DSLR 4K video. Currently, Canon's mirrorless cameras are significantly behind the competition from Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic. Most posts here about equipment are about equipment with advanced features or performance. That's why you don't see many posts about Canon here. If Canon releases a full frame mirrorless camera, and if it compares well against the competition (Sony), you will see more posts her regarding Canon.

You let me know when you can make images like Elena. She's using long in the tooth technology from Canon dating 6 years back. It's the photographer and not the tool. Cameras can make the job easier but the deciding factor is the photographer making the image.

Agreed, the photo is up to the photographer, knowledge/experience, skill with equipment you use, and some luck.

Isn't the question you posit itself a "quality debate?"

Not really, both are good. And sometimes not so good, but overall the history of both has proven them more then successful and excellent equipment for the skilled user. I'm a Canon user, but anyone offering me a current model Nikon to use I think I'd enjoy working with that.

company's what? Singular noun with apostrophe "s" must be followed by another noun.
