Interesting comment. I find the menu system rather transparent once played with. then again ditto for my cannon.

What I like about the sony is the vast number of cheap legacy lenses. just ordered a 135 canon 3.5 for $21.

Regarding the G11. A great camera but limited in that it is a fixed telephoto lens. Also, sensor is rather small. I used one exclusively for about 5 years.

I have the Sony a6000 and a99ii and a65. also a canon SX50. The sx50 use to be my get and go, travel camera but now the a6000 has taken it's place. Great features, great image and fits in my pocket as well as uses ANY old lens I have. Granted, the image is not as good as my a99ii will do but dam close. I keep learning new things that it can do every day. Getting the Play Memory Aps for it and you can do away with a lot of filters like graded ND. Super price right now from Sony. I have the "kit" lenses 16-50 and 55-210. They all are fine. It is easy to slip the camera into a jacket pocket and the other lens in the other pocket and away I go. My only complaint is the location of the Movie button. My neck strap sometimes hits it and I'll be taking a movie of my pocket. Minor thing though. Happy Shooting

I bought the a6000 last year and absolutley love it! I took it on a trip to Greece and had fantastic results. I took both kit lenses it came with, but only used the 16-55. I have since purchased a 50mm for taking photos of my grands and have gotten beautiful results. I'm going to add the Sigma 30mm and I will be set. I rarely use my d7100 now.

There are lots of Youtube videos to help with the menu. I watched one and had my camera set up and ready to go in a very short time. Be sure to purchase an extra battery or two.

A6000 is my "go to" motorcycle camera. 16-50 and 55-210 and I'm covered for most travel I do on the bike. This camera takes great photo, is light and easy to use once you learn the menu and it has what I need. You need a couple of spare batteries. This thing really goes through them. I am just waiting for an excuse to get the Zeiss 16-70 f4. This will equate to a 24-105 on the crop sensor and be just about perfect for a travel/motorcycle camera.

I don't think you can go wrong with A6000. I sold the 55-210 mm and bought the 18-200 mm as a walk around lens (but many folks like the compactness of the 55-210). The 16-50 kit is and I good also and I use it often - had good results especially long exposure night landscapes.

Hi Everyone ,
ive been using a Canon G11 as my walk around camera and very good it is .
It has its limitations though ( as any camera has )..

Thinking of getting an upgrade to a Sony A6000 ..
Reviews mostly say its an excellent camera ..

Anybody have any experience of this model ?
Any pitfalls ?

The only thing I can find is its Electronic Viewfinder ...Oh how I hate them !!
Why dont they just put in an optical one .. surely it's what everyone wants ..

Thanks

I have had an a6000 for several years now and I have really enjoyed it. I use the LCD for the majority of my shooting, so the evf is not that much of a factor for me. I have especially enjoyed experimenting with 'legacy' lenses and other lenses that can be adapted to it, including some Canon 'L' glass. It is almost customary to denigrate 'kit' lenses, but when all is said and done, I think that in general the 'kit' lenses (16-50, 18-55, 55-210) give rather respectable results in comparison to many of the more expensive lenses.

Pretty hard to beat the A6000 for the money. There’s not much negative being said about it. I had one, but now have the A6300 because it’s a bit more solidly built. I don’t mind the EVF, either. I also have a G-16 which is a decent little camera, but has an OVF that I find next to useless because there is no information I displayed in it and there is serious parallax with it. As a result I just use the rear panel display. But if you’re looking to upgrade and like the G-11, you might want to look into the G-16. In the meantime, I’m really liking my A6300.

Sony makes a good camera. I shoot a
NEX 7 and like the images, I also shoot a Canon 5D series, I like the images out of this camera also.

My buddy shoots with a Sony 6000 and he produces some fine images.

Point being is each camera offers some unique features, they are just different.

A few responses into this thread a post was “G11 a better camera”....Well, two very different cameras, the sensors are in two different classes. A6000 APSC vs what, a 1” sensor in the G11? The ability to use almost any lens system made with the A6000 vs a fixed lens on the G11.

The G11 is a fine camera. The Sony A6000 will alllow you to do a lot more if that is what you’d like.

I have the a6300 and its viewfinder is electronic, not optical.

If you feel the viewfinder is the most important aspect of a camera, you might be happier with the A6300 or the A6500.

I absolutely love my A6000 and now take it with me on trips, leaving my Nikon D800E at home. It has a terrible menu system, but I got past that after about 6 months; and the documentation that comes with it gives you next to no information, but I bought a handbook and negated that shortcoming. The A6000 is compact, sturdy, and takes great photographs, and that's all I really care about.

I do not have an A6000, but a friend is a long time professional photographer & he speaks very highly of his. I own the Sony RX10iii which I love, not the least is due to the fixed 24-600mm lens. What flexibility!! I also own NikonD800 and D5300. Unless doing super large prints, the Sony photos are just as good.

The answer is yes, and the EVF is the answer to our prayers....
I had the G12 and it’s a good snapshot camera. A little bulky for travel. The Sony RX 100 series is much better to carry for travel. The A6xxx series are great, the a6500 having IBIS. If the EVF somehow fails to please, you can always use the LCD for the “live-view” function.
Have fun!

I own one. Excellent in low light. Lightning fast AF. Love the EVF.
For me it is the perfect travel camera. Reviews say the 6300 & 6500 are even better.

From my camera journal (FWIW):

My first digital camera (a slightly used Canon G-10 compact) was purchased on eBay in August of 2011, for the express purpose of "travel". At that time it was wonderful for that purpose.

Shortly thereafter, I purchased a used Canon S100, because the G-10 did not fit my pockets. The dreaded "Lens Error" (twice in two years) caused me to give it up for the Sony RX100III,

After trying to photograph flying grandkids, dogs, jet boats flying up the river, etc., with these cameras; in April of 2014, I purchased a "used" Sony Alpha a6000 for $400 and the previous semi-pro owner threw in an unused 16-50mm kit zoom (which I seldom use). That camera system captures almost anything that moves. (and I've never missed the G-10's "optical viewfinder".)

Today, I'm about to leave for a kids basketball game, outdoor soccer match (in the sun), and an indoor soccer "game".
The only camera that will go with me is the a6000 + 55-210 zoom lens + 24mm f/1.8 Sony-Zeiss + 3 batteries. The RX100III, and the (most fun) Fujifilm X-E2IV will stay home.
