No More B&H For Me!

I pretty much have no choice except to continue to buy from B & H and their competitors, here in NE Illinois the brick and mortar photography stores either are no longer in operation or what remains I have had issues with in the past so will not take my business to them. They are always trying to sell me something that is "just as good", like SD memory cards. I know what I prefer, so I buy them in multiples from B & H when necessary. Locally they have done NOTHING to earn my business. Back in the day, when Calumet was in Oak Brook, IL, I bought my first D7100 from them and my Tamron 150-600mm from them. Still have the Tamron; the D7100 I had issues with and Calumet offered me a full refund which I accepted. Eventually, getting impatient for the then long awaited successor to the Nikon D300, I bought another D7100, but from B & H because by that time Calumet had filed for bankruptcy.

I have been a B&H customer for many years, and the reason being laser fast free shipping and no sales tax. This past week I received a letter from them stating they had notified the state of Colorado of my purchases which amounted to slightly over 3K. Now I know we are supposed to pay the state taxes voluntarily on our purchases from out of state businesses, but I believe not many do, at least I didn't until now. Being a Canon shooter B&H priced those items at list and the savings was in taxes. So, from now on I will make my purchases from my local brick a mortar store which is Mike's Camera in Boulder, Colorado (which is 9 miles away) and not have to deal with this when I file my state taxes. No problemo, and no more waiting around for the big brown truck, but has anyone else received a letter like mine from B&H? I shudder at the though of receiving a letter from Adorama!

This could be the best thing that has happened for local camera stores.

Yeah your right Marine B&H sucks because Colorado wants their due taxes.

I live in Florida, have spent thousands at B&H, and not paid sales tax---"tax avoidance"
But if confronted, I will, without whining, pay the tax and continue to frequent B&H.
B&H has always served me well.

left, You do not like the "nonsense" that you mention. Does that mean you approve of the Pentagon and other related budgets?

Did I mention military spending in my examples? No I didn't so no hypocrisy there. To be sure there is loads of waste in military spending and that should be attacked just aggressively as waste in any other area. One of the key roles of government is to protect our borders so military spending is a necessity. Spending our tax dollars on grants for the study of a housefly's sex life is not a necessity.

If I understand it correctly, you are “done” with them because they will not assist you in cheating the State of Coloorado?

I understand wanting to "save" on purchases but I will always believe in supporting local business.
As long as my local merchant is close, they will always get my business. Putting away my soap box now.

Or pay your taxes! It's about time something is done about tax cheats. Aside from denying your local municipalities the money they need to provide services, you cripple local businesses.

Bill, calling a person who's trying to save money by not paying a sales tax a cheat is a bit much. When considering all the illegals who don't pay any state or federal taxes, our government who doesn't hesitate to give "OUR" money to other countries, and support those that bleed the system, and the ridiculous amount of taxes we pay, then I too am a tax cheat!

No sir, I didn't say B&H sucked and I realize reading comprehension is difficult for some. I merely stated the advantage of ordering from B&H had gone away with the state sales tax and I would be frequenting Mike's Camera in Boulder, CO. Duh.....

How high is that horse?

Not high enough!!! As someone whom regularly reviews my out-of-state purchases when I do my state taxes, and pays the alternative use tax, I do feel entitled to call it as it is - tax cheating!. These taxes pay for the roads your big brown truck drives down to deliver your packages, the schools your kids (or grandkids) go to, the police and fire departments that protect you, and more

While I am all in favor of each person finding every legal means to lower their tax bill, why do you feel entitled to break the law?

As for the mail-order businesses, their day in court is coming. They know people routinely compare net delivered prices, so they can raise prices, knowing the many (most?) will “do the wrong thing” and not take into account paying those required sales/use taxes and profit - literally- from the difference. I think the courts will overturn the precident that banned this, and the technology certainly exists for the online platforms to properly collect by zip code and remit the proper amount to the right jurisdictions.

I know this is just MHO, but seeing my property and state taxes continue to rise knowing that local businesses are closing (depriving governments at all levels - local, state, and federal this revenue) due to this unfair completion combined with people feeling “entitled” to break the law and not pay their fair share, if you are in this (hopefully) minority - shame on you.

The reason most people dislike taxes is because of the wasteful government spending of our money. Aid to foreign countries that hate us, grants for the study of the sex life of a housefly and other such nonsense.

You get no arguement from me on this front! Much of what government does, especially as one climbs from local to county to state to federal, is wasteful or not-needed, and should be fought vigorously either directly or through electing people whom share this view.

That said, it is moot vs this thread. The law is what it is, and a person whom cheats on their taxes by not paying what is do shifts the burden on me and the rest of your neighbors. Are you willing to stand next to them, look them in the eye, and tell them they need to pay higher taxes as you feel entitled to cheat and not pay your legally required share?

Don't fret the $1.50 you will save on your federal taxes will offset the state tax!

At least that is what Ryan/Trump said. They know the millions they will garner will offset any state taxes they have to pay!

That may be a contributing factor, but the biggest is the cost of overhead to brick and mortar stores. Hard to compete with virtual stores.

Your beef is with the state of Colorado--B&H is simply following state law which, for retailers, is as follows:

Every non-collecting retailer with total gross sales into Colorado of $100,00 or more in a calendar year must:
– provide a Transactional Notice to all Colorado purchasers at the time of purchase;
– provide an Annual Purchase Summary to all Colorado purchasers by January 31 of each year; and
– provide an Annual Customer Information Report to the Department by March 1 of each year.
