No More B&H For Me!

I have been a B&H customer for many years, and the reason being laser fast free shipping and no sales tax. This past week I received a letter from them stating they had notified the state of Colorado of my purchases which amounted to slightly over 3K. Now I know we are supposed to pay the state taxes voluntarily on our purchases from out of state businesses, but I believe not many do, at least I didn't until now. Being a Canon shooter B&H priced those items at list and the savings was in taxes. So, from now on I will make my purchases from my local brick a mortar store which is Mike's Camera in Boulder, Colorado (which is 9 miles away) and not have to deal with this when I file my state taxes. No problemo, and no more waiting around for the big brown truck, but has anyone else received a letter like mine from B&H? I shudder at the though of receiving a letter from Adorama!

This could be the best thing that has happened for local camera stores.

I also was surprised when I received the same type of Letter from them. The letter I received said that it was sent to me alone and did not notify the state, however my numbers are much smaller than yours.

Colorado must be leaning on them heavily. I thought the state is in the black, thanks to the nascent Green industry? If Colorado is really aggressive about this, expect to hear from most other out of state businesses that send a lot of product to CO. Or pay your local USE tax like a good little photographer. Be happy if they don't go after your purchase history and demand that you pay what you owe in tax and the penalties. Like North Dakota tried to do with Quill, an office supplies company. The case was tried before the Supreme Court, and ND lost because having an 800 ordering number did not constitute a Nexus in ND (or anywhere else), and that allowing ND to demand and collect sales tax from Quill and other companies would have set a precedent that would have allowed the 6,000 unique tax districts to follow suit (no pun intended), and it would have resulted in bureaucratic chaos and a huge negative impact on interstate commerce.

Or pay your taxes! It's about time something is done about tax cheats. Aside from denying your local municipalities the money they need to provide services, you cripple local businesses.

I roughly recall reading in the newspaper that this arose out of congressional debate over the new tax statute and that some states were saying they wanted the revenue from vendors such as you mention. I am not certain if my memory is correct on the details but that may be the root of it. Nevertheless good luck with your local shop. I too used to buy a lot from Adorama, since the 70s, but have found myself just ordering what I want through a store not far from home. The folks are helpful and the price is no different as we have no sales tax here. But we have high income tax so I suppose it is a wash.

Naw, I'm happy in beautiful and colorful Colorado. Mike's Camera will get to know me on a first name basis!

In the state of Colorado it appears that the law has changed in regard to online purchases: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/General10.pdf.. Thanks for the heads up. Will have to now check to see if CAs laws have changed too. It's all in the name of being fair to the brick and mortar stores.

If you have a brick and mortar store near you you should be supporting that store because you my friend are the contributing factor to camera stores closing and a lot of retail stores closing all across this country,, sorry just my opinion.

I guess people should not have purchased automobiles and kept using their horses drawn buggies for transportation.
