Any suggestions based on your experience?

I would go for a golden retriever any time.

We love our Tibetan Terrier. One of the best things to buy when you have a photograph-dog is a waist belt leash. My husband and I combine hiking, bird watching, photography, and dog walking so having the waist belt let's me focus on the first 3 without worrying that our friend wanders off.

here here!! Absolutely. We got our rescue "Harlee" who just turn one this week and she is just a dream to have with us when I am out and about doing my photograpy. Love the OP's question. Gives everyone a chance to show off their dog which we can't help ourselves from doing!

After reading these pages I'm surprised that no one has suggested a mutt. One said let the dog pick you which of course includes all dogs. I have shared my homes over the years with several dogs and to me cross breeds have been the most loyal and obedient.

If you pick a shelter or rescue dog, odds are the will be of mixed breed. Even though they might look like they are of pure heritage most will be of mixed heritage. My guy a Great Pyrenees mix, enjoying the snow.

The success of any dog is the consistency of actions by the owner. Training and consistency make the difference. It takes more discipline by the owner than the dog actually.
I am partial to Golden Retrievers, but Labs are also awesome. A third choice might be a Portuguese Water Dog.

Good luck making a selection.

Wondering why not a Jack Russel terrier? I'm looking for a small smart dog.

Because you can throw a chihuahua farther?
Seriously, my Jack Russell is a barker that chases anything that moves. YMMV.

I had a tri colored collie that traveled everywhere with me. He got a lot of notice so I could take whatever pictures I wanted.

Historical fact. The first Jack Russel Terrier was a b*tch named Trump.

I forgot to say, rescue dog is the best! We all need second (or more) chances and millions of dogs are killed because it's easier than deal with the problem.

I think I am not a dog person. I am good enough with other people's dogs when it comes to petting and cooing over them, but I really don't think I want the responsibility of looking after one. I grew up with working farm dogs. They weren't toys or playmates. They had jobs and knew their place. They were cared for, but not pampered. They had purpose.

Everybody tells us we should get a dog, presumably because they think our lives are pathetic without one. We are empty nestors now and enjoy the freedom of traveling abroad a couple of times a year and going away at weekends. On the other hand, I didn't think I wanted kids - until we had one (or two). Are dogs like kids? Do they win you around? Should I listen to others and get one and hope it all works out?

This thread took off faster than I suspected. You've all had wonderful suggestions and I have much to consider. Thank you for your posts.

I currently live with three 10yr old dogs. The boxer, Bailey is losing her vision and the others can't keep up or wander off hunting. I live in warm climate, So Calif, and most of my shooting is in the suburbs or city. I am ready to add a 4th younger dog, to join me on photo shoots. btw, I love your pet pix with their names. Here are mine: Bailey, Georgie and Opie.
