Got lots of smiles.

The absolute BEST dog of my life ( and I've had an awful lot of really good ones) is my rescue from the pound, a Pt Bull. He'd been there for 6 months and was due to be put down. In reality, he's the one that rescued ME.

You can't go wrong with a giant schnauzer. They are steady, amazing companions.

Border Collie - extremely intelligent, can be trained to do most anything, loyal, obedient

After reading these pages I'm surprised that no one has suggested a mutt. One said let the dog pick you which of course includes all dogs. I have shared my homes over the years with several dogs and to me cross breeds have been the most loyal and obedient.

My wise and very intelligent wife offered the best suggestion yet. A St Bernard. Complete with the brandy barrel thing.

Better to have a laid back dog. My photography involves a lot of waiting for wildlife to show up. Shepherds are really smart, need activity and can get bored and frustrated. That being said, I have one and I have to say it is nice when she alerts me to interlopers and has the capability to back her action. She puts up with it but she can complain sometimes. Small dogs are active and yappy. You want a dog just content to be with you whatever you are doing. Lots of choices.

I like to take photos of run down houses in the city and they are in the worst neighborhoods. That is why I take my Pit Bull with me.

My very concerned black lab/samoyed mix Ripley who channeled my wife from the top of the rock face as i was shooting the class 5 rapids at the water's edge below her.

Very true, good to have a dog that listens and obeys it's master.

I've used St. Bernards, Tibetan Mastiffs and Pyrenees for outdoor photography. They're big enough to scare off predators and strong enough to help carry their food, water and some of your equipment in saddle bags.

Stuffed ones work really well for sitting and behaving and dont eat much. I would agree with the golden or lab
