I have cards ranging in capacity from 16gb to 256gb. In all the years I've been using SD, CF and XQD cards, I've had 1 card fail and that was an 8gb card. A 256gb CF card and 128 gb SD card go in the 5DSr. A 256gb XQD and 128 gb SD card go in the D500. The 5DIV has two 128gb cards in it. My other cameras have 16gb to 128gb cards in them. My miscellaneous parts case has several spare CF, SD and XQD cards in it, how many I don't really know.

For my sports stuff I was quite happy using 64GB cards in my D4S bodies. I could typically make it through most games (basketball, football, etc...) on a single card, but I typically shoot one in the first half and one in the second in case I have any trouble with the cards.

I was surprised when I found I could fill a 64GB card with RAW files with my D5, depending on the event. Slightly larger files and a few more frames a second pushed me to start using 128GB cards. Under most conditions it's overkill because I won't shoot long enough on a single card to fill it.

Here is how I typically use cards for sports:
D5 1 x 128GB XQD recording RAW, 1 x 64 GB XQD recording JPG
D4S(1) 1x 64 GB XQD recording RAW, 1x 64 GB CF recording JPG
D4S(2) 1x 64 GB XQD recording RAW, 1x 64 GB CF recording JPG

In addition you'll find the following in my bag: 1 x 128 GB XQD, 6 x 64 GB XQD, 6 x 64 GB CF, 4 x 32 GB XQD, 4 x 32 GB CF - This lets me have the ability to shoot several games or events on a single day and keep each event on separate cards.

2 64GB cards, one for each slot. No extra
The fastest average write speed on camera is 71 MB/s using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s and I can store about 3,000 NEF 14bit files on a card.

How many and what size memory cards do you use and carry with you?

My go to is the SanDisk Extreme Pro's, 16, 32, and 64 GB, 95 MB/s. I usually fill the card after many culling sessions. Then I get a new one and store the old one for future use.

I carry 2 64gb extreme pro cards. I upload to laptop after shooting which uploads to Amazon Cloud when connected to internet. Cloud auto downloads to home ws.

32gb CF cards and 64 or 128gb CFast cards. I think the read/write, especially the write, speed of the cards is an important factor depending on what and how many FPS you are shooting. I did find a couple 256mb CF cards from about 15 years ago...those can hold 9-10 RAW files each...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

As camera sensors got bigger, so did my cards. I used 16gig cards in my D700, 32gig cards in my D800, and now 64gig in my D850.

Usually have either an 8, 16 or 32gb card in use. Size in most cases do not matter as I have been in the habit from years gone by that after two hours of shooting I insert a new card. My thinking is I can basically only lose 2 hours of 'stuff' if the card craps out.

Only had one card fail over the years but this method while kind of extreme works for me.

I never use anything larger than a 32 and I carry about a dozen with me.

I agree. A 32 gig card holds over 800 shots in my Alpha 850. I usually only carry 2 cards if I'm shooting in my local area. When I'm travelling, there are are at least 5 cards in my bag plus 1 in the camera.

I carry 10 cards, ranging from 16-32 gb, I do this when I travel and each night I change cards.
Also they are all higher speed, so they can also handle video

I use SanDisc 8 GB. I find that these have enough space for what I need, and, if i need more, I just take out another. Usually I carry 6 or 7 with me. After I am finished shooting, I post all the images to my computer, and to an external hard drive. Then I flip the switch on the SanDisc so that it cannot be used or erased accidentally, label it and store it in an archival container. Oh, and they are very inexpensive.

I have two in my D750. One duplicates the other. I have cases for SD cards, and I'll carry one with several cards if I'm going away for a few days. I shoot with either 64 or 32GB.

8 GB per month, 2 gb back up. Transfer to computer on the first of the month and format.
