Recently someone in this forum discussed the virtues of a hand strap but I cannot find the post. I am looking for a good quality hand strap for large SLRs and would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

I don't use them cause they get in the way when I take vertical shots and after using one for about a half hour my wrist hurts.

Peak Design. The anchors attach to the camera and then it is a breeze to change out a neck strap for a hand strap / clutch etc. They even have anchor links that attach to any regular camera strap and will then connest to the Peak anchors. However the Peak straps are so nice you will probably want to get one in addition to your hand strap.
See the new anchor links here.

I'll second any peak design strap or product . I have the Slider lite for my Sony a7ii. Yesterday I saw two of their bags at REI and they are gorgeous.

Two things you should look for, which might guide your choice

I used to have one brand of hand strap, which, in general, was quite nice. (Sorry, don't remember the brand might have been OpTech.) But, it had a large base plate, which blocked the battery compartment on my Nikon (initially D90, now D5500). That meant that, in order to change the battery, you had to unscrew the plate. I now use it on my Sony.

I now have a BlackRapid strap, which has the virtue that, in addition to the hand strap, it has an optional wrist strap, for added security. But, with that one, there is no 1/4" tripod mounting hole in the base. It doesn't block the battery compartment, though. But, for long exposures and panoramas, I have to dismount the strap, unless I am using a long lens, with a tripod hole in the base.

Net-net, though, I love using a hand strap. Much faster and less straining than a neck strap, by far.

I have RRS L Plates on my Canons, and one of the very nice hand straps they sell.

Many to pick from on Amazon. I found one I really like for about $15.

There are several that look very good. I prefer a shoulder strap for the freedom.

The one I have has both a hand strap and a shoulder strap. Feels a little weird but works. I like it for the extra security when I am carrying it one handed.

Peak Design. First it’s realy secure and comfortable, and can be adjusted with one hand. The quick conectors are made of Spectra, which is a high modular super amazing cord stronger than steel. Theses quick conectors are also used to quickly attach or remove your camera strap. It’s a great system. https://www.peakdesign.com/product/straps/anchor-links I have no ownership or interest in Peak Design.

I am using a strap from Spider Holster with my D810 and it is fantastic. Stability even with a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8G VR2 mounted.

best of all of them Cardweaver paracord hand straps , a wide range comfortable, brilliant desifn, and strong enough to support you! Way better than leather or plastic

Amazon has a number of hand camera straps for under $10 (with free shipping, too). . .I picked up one for $6.98 that works with ALL my Nikons from the F4 thru the D7100. . easily adjusts to your hand size; and, fastens to a tripod . . .I also picked up an Optech shoulder strap (under $20) that can be shortened to a "wrap-around-your wrist" strap by simply releasing the snap-locks

I have used a hand grip for decades and have tried several brands. The absolute best I now use on my 3 cameras: Herringbone Classic. Made entirely of high grade leather in Korea. Amazon has them. Caution- they come in 2 types; with and without a base plate. They are somewhat difficult to attach but there are 3 good videos on Youtube.
Because the leather is stiffened, the strap does not flop around when you attach them to your tripod. Additionally, loosen the settings on your ball head and use your hand to quickly position your camera then lock down.
I have no doubt these will outlast me, and I never worry about them slipping loose. The price is from 34-43$ and they come in colors.

I suggested the hand strap and I made my own with a piece of webbing, a snap hook from Ace Hardware and a 1/8" pop rivet with a small washer on each side of the rivet. Cost ~ $2. Webbing can be purchased at any REI store by the foot or I found some in my camera "junk" pile. Those straps for the lens carriers you never use work just fine. Joby and OpTech have great products if you don't want to make one.

I’ve used Camdapter hand straps on my DSLRs for years. They work well with an L-bracket and are very comfortable for me. When I want a shoulder strap as well, I use a Black Rapid strap that attaches with a clamp to the L-bracket, so it’s quick and easy. I purchased the L-bracket, clamp, and the hand strap from Really Right Stuff: http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Hand-Strap-from-Camdapter. Wish I could find a system I liked as much for my Fuji XT-2 (I have a hand strap....I just don’t like it as well.)
