Welcome to the Ugly in Ugly Hedge Hog. Look, you have got to have a thick skin when you're on the internets. Anonymous Flame Wars and backstabbing have been a part of discussion groups snce dial up bulletin boards.

Just ignore them and continue.

One thing to keep in mind. The internet is not in any time zone. Chances are that your comments are not read as they happened. Your comfy afternoon chat may be read after a night out in the bar. In the early morning hours of a hangover or in some dopeheads 'higher' moments. Photography is 'for everyone' apparently. Not everyone is charming 24/7

Terminology does not 'often' cross physical borders or 'age' well. 'Queer' used to be simply another word for 'something odd or strange' it was not about gender or sexuality. What americans call a 'fanny-pack' used to give UK teenage boys 'the giggles'. Fanny is not your Ass.(near but no coconut)

The PC has allowed society to be 'out of bounds'. Beyond censore even. The governments of the world are trying to get Amazon to pay its taxes. Facebook to ban child images etc without success. We have pirates and the darkweb....Enter here those who dare....

On the other hand....you can chat and share ideas with peoples of all nations. What is not to like about that!
Just so long as you realise - no-one is 'as you imagine'. Not everyone has your 'values'. Not everyone is 'who you think they are'.

You tell your children...'its a big bad world out there' "be careful". Now its come into your home...!

Be careful and watch out for your friends. Stay with people you know. Beware of strangers.
Play nice....

As another relative nube, welcome to the UHH.

IMO, your overall experience here will be extremely positive. There's always the nay-sayers, negativity and rudeness no matter where you go. As many here have said, the internet is akin the wild west. I would just look at the positive and let the negative roll away.

In this case, I don't believe the comment was directed at you, but was a response to another commenter. You should also consider a couple of other issues when reading posts. 1) the membership is international, so slang means different things in different countries and 2) the autocorrect feature of many systems can change a misspelled word to something unintended. My iphone is notorious for that.

I also looked at many of the posts from the commenter that raised your ire. I didn't see any derogatory or demeaning comments (opinionated yes, derogatory no) when responding to others. In my view, he/she doesn't seem to be one of the regular flame-throwers that frequent this site.

Any way, welcome to the UHH and I hope that you have a much more enjoyable experience in the future.

Mike

Dont let them get you down. I belong to another photo board and its a lot worse than here. Most there believe they have to be very negative on everything. I have not seen that here in the general topics or photo gallery. I did try a couple of the specialized galleries and got some immediate push back. I just put it down to a group of individuals trying to keep their sub groupss private to a select few. Outsiders not welcome. So I just stay in the general photo gallery section and have had no problems. Good luck and hope you stay around.

I saw the response you mentioned and you are absolutely correct. The comment was gratuitous. Suggest you add them to the ignore list and carry on.

Less than a week in....

So in my initial post, I was gently warned that there might be some "gruff" comments from some who are tired of what they believed to be questions that have been repeatedly asked. I get it and was expecting it. But I then create a post with a question regarding a photo and I get a vile response that was out of line and a personal attack out of nowhere. I have tried to complain to admin via PM here and on the tab at the comments section and no response.

I am not comfortable with the possibility of similar responses/slurs/attacks. How does this person get to act like this? Not sure I will be as active as I had planned to be.

LoL, Swart, hey, it's just the Internet.
When we were kids, some kids, when not in school, just sat in their rooms looking at Montgomery Wards catalogues. Well, those kids are still here only now they have the internet.
Yes, a full half of men are not well endowed, some learned that it was not the size of the ship, but how you drive it.
Others are here on the Hog trying to make up for what Extenze just can't do!! LoL
Yes, I think it was you that had a post about light junkies, I told you to get a Canon, but I think it was cordial, I hope ?!?! LoL
Don't let the trash talkers get you down.
If you're gonna complain about them, at least tell us who they are. They aren't nice to you, why do you feel a need to protect them? Expose the un-endowed ones!!! LoL
If you tell us who it was, next time I run into him I'll break his knees for you!!! Hopefully it wasn't ME!!!

There is an ignore function on the site but it doesn't work very well. I have two or three jerks on my ignore list but I'm afraid I still see their posts. Best policy is to get a thick skin and ignore the jerks. They are on every Internet forum. There is a ton of good information on this site if you are willing to put up with the snide remarks of a handful of idiots. Best advice is, learn to use the search function so you're not asking Nikon vs. Canon or RAW vs. JPEG questions. Those do get a bit tiresome. If you're asking for honest critique and you're just looking to be stroked then don't ask. I've stopped giving real critique because over time I've learned most folks just want to be told how great they are.

Welcome to UHH! Without looking through your previous posts, I can almost guess who the offender was. There are a handful of idiots that love to be negative and dump on everyone, no matter what. That’s just who they are. Some of them respond on threads posted by innocent OPs just to attack the other trolls. Sometimes they highjack threads and go after each other just for the sport. Admin usually won’t step in unless someone breaks a rule pretty severely, so they may have seen your complaint but ignored it. At close to 82000 users now, I’m going to say that there are at least 81,900 really good people here, so find a way to ignore the 25 grumpy old men and a grumpy woman or two. The rest of us look forward to your posts.

Unfortunate. It was an odd “out of the blue” comment. It’s possible it was an autocorrect.

From the way the word "queer" was used I would say it is someone at least as old as me (72) who grew up when the word meant something strange, weird or unusual often with overtones of fake. They used to refer to counterfeit money as "queer".
I am a READER and have been since I first learned to read. In small town libraries and schools you often found a lot of books written and published a long time ago. And I read a lot of them, I even read my Grandmother's copy of a "McGuffey Reader" from about 1900, first published long before that. I found it in a trunk in the attic of the old family farm house. They didn't use words or grammar the same then. A lot of 19th and early 20th century writers used both queer and gay a lot. Esp poets The words meant something else to them.
As a history teacher I know that when reading things written in the past you often have to find out what words and phrases meant at the time written or even a bit before then since writers had to be born and grow up with an education (often taught by people generations older) before becoming a writer.

Example: The Constitution was written by men educated in the mid 18th century and often learned the classics instead of the current 18th century language and knowledge.

"The past is a foreign county, they do things differently there." L. P. Hartley "The Go-Between" 1953 - though some say an almost identical sentence had appeared in other works earlier.

I agree with the other members that posted above. I read your prior threads and since you said they were homophobic I concluded that you were referring to the person that used the word "queer" in their post. However they did not call you a queer nor did they even use it in a context that I felt was even in reference to homosexuals though and I don't think that their post was offensive nor meant to be offensive. I think that if that post offended you that the problem is that you are overly sensitive to any usage of that word regardless of context and as such you are reading something into the post that wasn't really meant.

I think the OP just might be a snowflake. I suggest a day of commenting in the Attic to harden him up.
