Because there is 'standardized' raw file format, every time you change cameras you potentially need a new raw file editor application. My Adobe situation is indicative. Because I refuse to buy new Photoshop to replace my CS4 version, the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in is not upgradable and the compatible Adobe Digital Negative Converter is limited in the raw files it could convert. A raw from the Sony a6000 would convert, but the raw from the Sony a6300 would not convert. I imagine in this world of photographers there must every conceivable situation. JPEG is the initials of the name of the experts group that created jpeg. This is why I have been advocating for the world photography family to rise up and demand standardization of the raw file format. Will the Nikons, Canons, Sonys, etc be pissed - you bet.

There is a defacto 'standard' proprietary raw file format. It is Adobe's DNG format, which is published, and royalty free, but is not a 'formal' standard. It is proposed as one, but not yet adopted. There are good reasons for vendors to keep their raw files proprietary, most likely to be able to support other innovations in their cameras. To enforce a universal standard would also limit innovation or the benefit of it. The vendors usually provide free software that supports their latest technological advances. At least in the case of Canon, their free DPP software supports their cameras and allows saving as JPEG or 8 or 16bit TIFF or handing off directly to Photoshop.

You have a simple choice, get access to the latest and greatest technology, or work with a more generalized format that will not support some of the latest technology features for a considerable time, if ever. In your cited instance you are choosing not to update your software, or perhaps don't want to take the effort to use the software that the camera vendor supplies. Why should the vendor be responsible for and restricted by your personal choices?

Why not just ask something simple like “what is mankind and why is it here”.[/quote]

He says he has used “ACDee” (mis-spelling it) “for years and he really likes it”, but now he claims to be at a total loss regarding using the software for Raw images. He wants us to start at square one and teach him.

Is not one of the purposes of this site to offer advice to members other than the information that the company may provide on their website? Usually information from users is some of the best information you can seek.

It is quite clear that you are antagonistic and may need an Enema!
