Nice shots. Since we have had really low temps. here this week, I acquired some soap bubble solution and tried it at about 10 degrees. Not cold enough, they burst before freezing. And, it almost requires two people, one to blow the bubbles and one to take the picture. Did you add anything to your solution, or is it a simple soap solution? I tried adding some glycerine to mine, and it didn't seem to make a difference in how long they floated before bursting.

I wonder if the air is very dry, the water evaporates quickly, breaking the bubble.
Maybe it works better if it is humid outside?

I think more humid air would help.

Wanda, I used a solution of dishwashing liquid, water and corn syrup (found the recipe online). You can substitute glycerine for the corn syrup...I just used that because that's what I had on hand. I also read somewhere to add sugar to it for sparkle but I didn't try that. The corn syrup did help the bubbles stick around a little longer but I only had old bubble solution sitting around from when my kids used it, so I don't have much to compare it to. My big problem was wind. I had to keep the garage door open somewhat to keep the air cold enough (our garage is heated but just slightly). Wind was still coming in through the garage door so the bubbles tended to either pop, or get swept out the door. Had to chase a few. And lighting would be much better outside. The big bubbles are prettier but they also pop faster. I may try this again today since it may be the last day for really cold temps here (-16 wind chill right now). Tomorrow we warm up to 26!

DPullum, your frozen Santa sounds neat! That's creativity!

Thanks to everyone for all your great comments. I appreciate it!

Did a little more bubble freezing today. Some tips: catch the bubble on the bubble wand and they won't pop so easily. Transfer them to a piece of glass (I used a microscope slide) covered in bubble solution. They'll transfer pretty easily. And don't wear a bright red coat! The reflection will be in the bubble. After awhile my bubble solution started to freeze and get slushy. And the solution was freezing right in the bubble wand before I had a chance to blow the bubble. I decided it was time to go in the house. I got a few good ones today but I have a lot more practicing to do! Good luck and have fun if you want to try this!

Since the snowflakes have been few and far between, I decided to take advantage of our cold temps (-21 wind chill) and start experimenting with frozen bubbles. It's actually fascinating to watch them freeze and to read about the science behind it. It's also frustrating since there's not much time before the bubbles pop. Without going into boring detail, it took a lot of trial and error because I had to do it in the garage...too windy outside. Not good lighting which I'll try to work on today. But these I'm posting are the most decent out of a fleet of about 100 images. And I know they're not that great, I'll have to keep working on it. But hope you enjoy them and maybe go try your own! Those of you in warm climates...you can freeze soap bubbles in your freezer!
