What gives you the right to tell the OP to "butt out"???

My experience with Nikon service isn't all that good but I would say give them a call. I hate email then wait for respond. I much rather speak to a real person. To Nikon credit there is one time when I called the trying to buy the connector cover on my MD-4 motor drive they simply sent me some for free.

My retired ophthalmologist has had serious issues with Nikon. First with his D750 that was not repaired to his satisfaction and then the 28-300 that was not focusing at infinity, instead it was reaching 15 feet only. He has sent the lens twice and is ready for a third time.
This is not the Nikon I have always known. Nikon was at its best when Enhrenreich was the CEO and that was in the 70's and early 80's when the products and service was equal to none.
Nikon cameras and lenses is what I have used for more than 50 years. I have sent a lens and a camera to them in the past and they did a great job but I would be hesitant today to send them something. I prefer to deal with ACR (Authorized Camera Repairs) in Morton Groove, Illinois. They have an excellent customer service, repair Nikon gear only and the prices are very acceptable. I believe they can work on products still under warranty.
Nikon reliability has always been excellent but lately something is not working there like it should. According to my son Canon is even WORSE.

One of the problems Nikon has is they have to farm out a lot of work to independent, authorized repair dealers. Obviously you lose some control. When I was in Melville last spring I was told they don't have the physical space to house all the technicians they need.

My guess is that, like Canon, getting into the low price consumer market brought up not only the number of units sold, but the number that need repair.

If Nikon sticks to the restructuring they announced, they will start to concentrate on higher end products. That should help.

Have sent several messages to Nikon with problems and they have always answered me back. Sometimes it took 3-4 days but they always solved or tried to solve my problem.

Great idea! Nothing makes someone want to help you more than yelling at them on the phone!

Getting back to the camera, are you sure the lens is extending completely before it retracts and shuts off? You may want to try some of the same tactics that are used for a stuck lens. There are a few useful you tube videos that may help. Good luck either way.

It’s not a battery problem Lithium-ion rechargeable) . The last time I tuned the camera on (Coolpix S6900), the shutter cover opened, but it didn’t extend, and then shut off. I too thought at first that it might be a battery problem, so I tried a new one. Same result: the camera powers on, the lens won’t extend, and then it shuts off. The lens cover is now stuck open, too.

I had that same problem with a Lumix, it was caused by dust blowing around in Antelope Canyon, I never did get it fixed.

I saw my mistake. The lens did not come out at all. I would definitely try the suggestions on you tube.
