One person's necessity is another person's luxury. If a town has enough money to build a senior center or a youth center but not both, which do they build? Anytime governments spend money someone benefits. It might not be you or me this time but next time it will. So, who is to say what is necessary and what is not?

Somebody sure needs to decide. We are already in the hole for 21 trillion dollars. That's $21,000,000,000,000.00 that must be paid with interest. Maybe your town ought to not build either until they can get the money to pay for them from their own citizens. That would be a novel idea.

B & H has a new (last year) warehouse in NJ. Only NJ residents pay a sales tax - unfortunately, I'm one of them. The warehouse used to be in NYC and I was not charged sales tax. Adorama is the same.

Additionally, anyone living in NY, pays sales tax to B and H. They have a warehouse in Brooklyn as well as a physical presence in Manhattan where they have been for aeons.

Amazon is just about everywhere where as B&H is only in NY.

B&H has charged sales to NJ purchasers since early 2017. Reason is that they are building a facility in NJ and NJ has required B&H to collect NJ sales tax in anticipation of opening of the warehouse.

It's none of the state's business if you made tax free purchases during the year. If you were supposed to pay sales tax on the purchase you would have been charged sales tax.

Leftj - Wisconsin is very serious about having its residents report purchases for which no tax was collected in conjunction with annual income tax returns. In addition to collecting revenue, the state can follow up to ask the names of the vendors involved. I believe that was a contributing factor in Amazon’s decision to collect and remit taxes on most sales in the state. I would rather pay with my annual return than have to file quarterly estimated returns. It is certain the current president won’t block state governments from collecting what is due them.

If you ordered your D850, or other expensive gear, from outside of your state, were you charged sales tax? It appears Amazon charges it for my Idaho order, but B&H won't. Have not received my 850 yet. Maybe that's why B&H has a large back order.

Amazon has agreed to charge sales tax in most states now regardless of whether or not they have operations in the state. They just started doing this in Missouri this year and were doing it in Illinois for some time. Amazon is like many other large internet order sites that are being pressured to collect sales tax. They expect companies like B&H or KEH to collect but most do not so it falls back to the citizens of those states to do the reporting which many do not.

I will add one more thing, I recently used KEH for a first time purchase, a Nikon Motor Drive, based largely on what people have said here on UHH and was absolutely please with what I got. Except for one slight blemish you would think what I got was brand new out of the box. Thank you UHH and thank you to KEH.

Having lived in NY, NJ and other lots of other states, I think we can attest to the fact that if the state treasury can suck money out of you, they will certainly do all they can to get last cent out of you.
Now the real question is: where is all that money going???

Hold on to you hat and your camera ! This new Governor coming in has such big ideas , especially for the freeloaders , guess who’s going to pay for his ideas ? We the people by raising taxes ! Who voted for this guy ? I haven’t met a single person yet who has , yet he won .
And by the way , both Adorama and B&H have warehouses in NJ .

Amazon has also entered into agreements with a number of states that assess sales tax based on what is called "click-through nexus". It's a form of physical presence based on the location of computer servers through which web traffic is routed.
