If you ordered your D850, or other expensive gear, from outside of your state, were you charged sales tax? It appears Amazon charges it for my Idaho order, but B&H won't. Have not received my 850 yet. Maybe that's why B&H has a large back order.

It depends or whether or not the company has a physical buisness in your state.
Amazon is just about everywhere where as B&H is only in NY.

B&H does not collect Wisconsin sales tax on my orders, but the state makes up for that when I file my annual income tax return by requiring that 1) I compute the sales tax that should have been collected on all untaxed transactions during the year and 2) then requiring that I pay the tax. An annual hassle I would rather avoid, but I understand the state needs revenue, too. I doubt that B&H is delaying shipments for sales tax reasons.

Partially correct. You may make a purchase from Amazon and the sub-tier vendor may ship from their facility and usually charge no sales tax. Easy enough to check out. Adorama and several others may be in your selection choice when purchasing from Amazon.

EDIT: This is based on numerous orders and easy enough to check for yourself.

Cameta and B&H do not charge tax outside of NY. Same for for KEH if you are outside of GA. Adorama has a warehouse they ship from in NJ so they collect tax for both NY and NJ. Amazon collects tax for most states once they are viewed as the seller, i.e. you pay them even if it being provided by a 3rd party as well as when they have a physical location in that state (warehouse, shipping office, etc).

On a big ticket item like the D850, tax for the body only can be upwards of $350 just for the body. I personally prefer to deal with B&H and Cameta since 1) I don't have to pay tax and 2) I get to speak with a real person who knows cameras for any questions.

Enjoy your camera when it arrives. No matter where you purchased it, you are going to love it!

I see no reason for B&H to delay shipments. 6% is significant on a big purchase. I think I understand the reason for the long B&H back order list.

Check the laws of your state. If the business doesn't have a physical presence in-state, the state can't require them to charge sales tax; however, many states have a so-called "Use Tax" which is the same thing, except that it tasks you, the taxpayer, with the obligation to report and pay the tax. Most people just ignore it & don't pay. Some states are getting more aggressive about collecting it, though. I know my state, Virginia, now has a requirement to certify, under oath, on the state income tax return, that you made no purchases from out-of-state where you were not charged sales tax. If you sign your return & they catch you later, you can be charged with perjury. So check your state's laws & enforcement before thinking you don't have to pay.

Ah, were it only 6%! Purchases above $110 are subject to a City Sales Tax rate is 4.5%, NY State Sales and Use Tax is 4% and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge of 0.375% for a total Sales and Use Tax of 8.875%. Of course once you cross the Hudson and live in NJ, all that goes away (unless you decide to pick it up at the store even if you bought it online and live in NJ :( )

B&H Does now charge sales tax in NJ, they have a warehouse now in Florence NJ. I just ordered a few things from Adorama due to the fact They do not charge sales tax in NJ. Also Allens Camera in Levittown only charges sales tax on shipped orders in PA. . Great people to deal with also!

Adorama will charge you tax in NJ as their main warehouse is in Elizabeth NJ. I ordered a flashsale item last week (audio mixer for my camera) and paid tax. At least it was free shipping

Funny as I ordered a lens, free shipping, and ordered another $80 in merchandise, all shipped from the same place and same box and they charged me 4 plus dollars in shipping. LOL, that won't happen again.

Having lived in NY, NJ and other lots of other states, I think we can attest to the fact that if the state treasury can suck money out of you, they will certainly do all they can to get last cent out of you.
Now the real question is: where is all that money going???
