I enjoy the combination of science and art. I enjoy viewing a scene, visualizing how a print of that scene will look, metering and possibly filtering the scene to enable the exposure to render a capture which will enable the visualized steps to produce my interpretation of the scene being photographed. This also applies paid work.

Additionally, going with a picture is worth a 1000 words, this illustration sums it up.

My dad was a D-Day glider pilot in WW ll, and an artist and an avid photographer. I have a recorded history of my family as the result. When I was in Vietnam I bought my first real camera and my life changed in a moment. My tour of Vietnam is well documented and I consider many of the pictures as important historical documents today. Photography was very important therapy in helping me adapt to civilian life. It gave my life purpose and meaning. Much of our world's history is written on film. Where would we be without it?
I have a body of work I call History Today, Gone Tomorrow. I've photographed the world around me for 50 yrs now and the world has changed dramatically, and I've recorded a lot of the change. To leave my home without a camera is to turn around and go back to get one. I'm never without a camera, even if only my iPhone. I've been teaching photography for 40 yrs now and get to share my enthusiasm with others. At one time my film and processing (and dark room supplies) were probably at times the biggest expenses in my life. Now with digital I can shoot all I want with little cost. I'm now semiretired and travel a lot. Natural areas, small towns and other personal projects keep me busy. I still teach part time and do occasional commercial work. It doesn't take much to keep me happy. I've now outlived a lot of my friends and my wife, so photography is again my connection with life and personal therapy. I travel a lot! I prefer 2 lane roads and places where few people go. Utah is my favorite place to shoot and I've still got a lot of exploring to do there. Some of my B&W work is here:

Used to be to record memories. Then I took a class and now it's to challenge myself and stretch my mind, as well as to record memories. Also, when the weather is better, for exercise. I think I should have started this new aspect of my hobby in Spring!

As if the UHH hasn't been polluted enough the past few months, more Chris T wannabes come out of the woodwork. Maybe the intelligent threads need the counterbalance, though.

Something about transducers fascinate some folks, me included. Light to chemicals, sounds to signals, print making, signals to sound. It's fun to capture and share sights through the filter of personal interpretation and the tools we use.

Nothing personal here, just a defender of wannabes in photography, since I gather I am one. To all those who already have made it, be grateful for us idtiots trying to reach above our birthright. If not for the countless mediocre people in the world, then who would perfect people have to compare themselves with? Actually, this is not a slam, just my way of helping the best feel even better about themselves. It's how we serve. We should also acknowledge that most wannabes just want to be better, not someone else.

Aside from doing it commercially or for some $ gigs! What does this hobby do for you?

Excepting today because I have a dentist's appointment at 8:00, I go out from 6 to noon each day and walk around taking pictures. I take an average of 500 each day, and that usually gets me anywhere from 10,000 to 24,000 steps each day. Keeps me looking and feeling 42 instead of 62.

Because life is busy and people lose focus of whats important. Photography can remind people of the beauty in the world. I need that reminder and if any of my pics touches someone all the better.

Primarily to share the world that I see, which is often from a unique perspective. Sharing allows others to see a world they might otherwise miss.
Beyond that, to preserve memories.

I suffer from Asperger syndrome, sort of a form of autism that makes it very difficult for me to relate directly to other people face-to-face.
It was always "safer" for me to stay behind the camera - taking photos, no one expected me to talk or interact so much.
So I guess it started as a defensive mechanism, then I found out I wasn't too bad at this camera stuff.

For the pure joy of it. When I see a beautiful scene in nature say or a little bird in a natural setting... whenever I see something that strikes a chord in my heart I want to remember that feeling & excitement forever. Just the attempt & thinking how best to present what I see must generate some addicting happy endorphins because with each feeble attempt I want to do it again & do it better. It is a hobby maybe a passion that leads me to wonderful outings & scenery, and wild places (especially in my younger days) that give me peace & beauty & contentment in my spirit.

When I take a picture, even a poor one, it captures the feeling & memory that I can relive over & over when I see it. Once in a great while I get one that is good enough that others seem to feel that feeling too or get a bit of pleasure from viewing it. That too brings me happiness. Once I took a gorgeous sunset picture right after a violent thunderstorm struck the Grand Tetons while camping at Jenny Lake...then a burst of orange & reds & vibrant colors struck the Mountains & Storm Clouds that stopped people in their tracks! The light was so unusual the air so pure & clear...nothing seemed to matter except to take it all in & stand in awe at God's beautiful Creation. Tents were blown away & possessions scattered all over the scene but people stopped & just stood, some started taking pictures. I did too knowing it was impossible to do it justice...but the resulting slide later made into a 16x20 framed picture hung in the lobby of my work place for years. My first Blue Ribbon winner at our annual photo contest. I was happy that others liked it, the prize was nice, but every time I stop & look at that slide I get lost in the remembrance of that moment of time from the far past. I can feel the strong winds again, my ears are deafened once more by the crash of the thunder, my eyes blinded by the memory of the lightening bolts striking the high peaks, the torrents of rain beating down on our VW camper bus ....seeing the poor grandfather & his two grandkids give a hopeless try at saving their tent then give up & get in their car and wait. My kids crying out afraid and asking what to do...I said watch & remember.

Then it all stopped it was totally quiet & the black clouds parted to let wonderful rays of sunshine through & start illuminating the landscape...it was a magical moment I will never forg et! The kids got quiet my wife was calm....I got my camera out & shot a roll of film...I see hear, feel and smell that moment all over again when I see that slide or picture...I can relive something incredible once more. That is why I take pictures I feel tiny bits of that excitement be it a little House Finch or a beautiful flower... or some bunch of weeds. Things that strike a response in my inner being, I want to capture that emotion & feel it again.
