Fuji XT-20 is remarkable at the price point and handles like a classic SLR. MANY support groups and Facebook groups and YouTube tutorials.

You already know that using an adapter you can use Nikon lenses but using those lenses could offset the balance of the camera. I would prefer lenses made specifically for the camera.
I have never used the mirrorless cameras made by Nikon but I know they have phase detection AF and that means you could have an advantage over someone like me who uses Olympus with contrast detection AF. It all seems to tell me that you will be ready for wildlife and sports photography while I will not be able to do that with my Olympus bodies, at least not as efficient as you could with such a camera.
Nikon is supposed to debut a new mirrorless system in 2018. If you can wait the new camera could be exactly what you need.

If and when Nikon comes out with a FF mirror less camera it will probably be in the $4K to $6K bracket and will still need an adapter to use its legacy lenses.

Perhaps. The rumors have been around for several years regarding a full frame mirrorless Nikon. The early rumors were that they would maintain the F-mount. The more recent rumors include a different mount This is the way to go. If Nikon wants to jump into the mirrorless pond, then they better go all in. Adapters will follow. From my perspective, the best reason to use an adapter is when the lens you want to use is not available in a “native mount”. Of course there are exceptions.

Personally, if you are looking at a mirrorless, I would stay away from the Nikon, which I believe is a technological dead end. Sony, Panasonic or Fuji would be my first choices.
Thanks for the reply. I know it's a low end camera but my son already ordered it and don't want to make him feel bad. He knows I shoot Nikon DSLR's and the J5 is the only mirror less they make right now.

Avoid Nikon mirrorless at all costs. Much better options out there. Hell, even canon is better, well only their latest mirrorless camera is. Better yet, come on over to Sony, Fuji, Olympus, or Panasonic. These are light years ahead of Nikon (and canon).
Yes, I love the Fuji and Olympus but he already ordered it and just wondered if I could use my DX lens for it. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your quick replies. Just found out from my wife my son ordered it two day's ago. My first choice was the Olympus OMD M10. My son isn't a camera buff (strictly a smart phone shooter) Sometimes you have to just go with the flow.

I agree. Both Canon and Nikon have missed the boat on mirrorless. They are each promising the stars for the future, but their past offerings are truly bad.

Fuji, Olympus, Sony and others have been in the mirror less business a lot longer than Canon and Nikon, it's not a matter of them missing the boat, they just need a little more time to perfect it.

I'm thinking about getting a mirror less camera, Nikon1 J5. Also own Nikon DSLR's and a couple DX lens...18-55 and 55-300. Can I use these lens on a J5 with an adapter?

Yes, but putting a big old zoom on a tiny J5 is a bit out of balance.

I built a new mirrorless (Lumix) system from scratch, rather than adapt my old Nikon lenses, and I’m glad I did. They fit and work so much better than the adapters I tried.

Or wait until Nikon comes out with its mirrorless. Depends on how old you are. I'm too old to wait for Nikon, (Nikon might not make it in my lifetime) so I went with Fuji.

I would add Olympus to your list.

If I could suggest, you should investigate a photographer named Thomas Stirr, there are others as well. You will see what can be done with an Nikon1. I personally have five assorted ones, and use them often. The people on this site have seen many images done with these cameras. They actually work quite well, despite the arm chair quarterbacks.
