I'm thinking about getting a mirror less camera, Nikon1 J5. Also own Nikon DSLR's and a couple DX lens...18-55 and 55-300. Can I use these lens on a J5 with an adapter?

Yes Nikon made the FT1 adapter but quite expensive at $236. Third party manufacturers like Fotodiox do make them at lower price.

Personally, if you are looking at a mirrorless, I would stay away from the Nikon, which I believe is a technological dead end. Sony, Panasonic or Fuji would be my first choices.

Do you know if there are adapters for those cameras that would allow the OP to use his existing lenses?

Avoid Nikon mirrorless at all costs. Much better options out there. Hell, even canon is better, well only their latest mirrorless camera is. Better yet, come on over to Sony, Fuji, Olympus, or Panasonic. These are light years ahead of Nikon (and canon).

Nikon seems to have set a pretty low bar for the Nikon 1 J5. From their web site - 'It delivers the portability of a compact digital camera but image quality that far surpasses most other compacts.' Sounds like it is basically just a compact with interchangeable lenses. Most of the other mirrorless manufacturers at least aspire towards full frame quality. The adapter costs nearly as much as your lenses are worth and will add to the bulk. I'd suggest just getting a superzoom compact or spring for a proper APS-C or M4/3 mirrorless.

Something I don't understand at all is that Metabones has an adapter to enable using Nikon F-mount lens on Pentax "Q". I love my Q-7, but Pentax hasn't added to that family in something like four years, so honestly we classify it as an evolutionary dead end.

You can use those same Nikon lenses on much better mirrorless cameras including Sony product line with results rivaling the latest D850 Nikon. The Sony A7RIII got a score of 100 the same as the D850 yet it is a mirrorless.

I agree with the other hogs here avoid the current Nikon mirrorless (a 1" sensor - seriously?) - if you want to stay within the Nikon family and can wait until next year there are rumors there might be a serious mirrorless line (FF/APSC with F mount) from Nikon, otherwise stick with the current champs - Sony, Fuji, Olympus - the downside is you really need new lenses - using adapters can be a pain, not to mention some loss of functionality or performance. I myself was considering going with Sony FF A7 xx rather than Nikon FF....we'll see.

Those rumors have been around for several years now. One had them using the F Mount for a FF. My response would be: don’t bother. If Nikon isn’t up to doing it right then they should forget about it. It will be difficult for any of them to compete with Sony in the FF market.

Fuji chose to leapfrog to the medium format market. I spoke with an industry rep yesterday, and they have no intent of developing an FF mirrorless. It makes sense: it would require another set of lenses along with their ASPC and the Medium format lines.

As long as you need an adapter there's no need to stick to Nikon, and there are superior mirrorless cameras out there.
