I just bought my niece a nice used D70 and a used 18-55 vr lens on ebay for $150 total for her Christmas present this year. She wants to step beyond her phone. This is a good start. It came with an extra battery and card.

Some eight year old kids have seen a different world than most American children, and responsibility and life where it was hard ages them early. Likely not in your case, so consider the ruggedness and rapidity of the results major factors in your choices. A sit down class or more may open them up, and kids learn quickly. Opening a new world of fixed images can change lives, both in the giver, and the receivers. Wisdom mixed with luck will give joy to all, we hope. Choice to be determined by the brightness and nature of the kids, as much as your best guess.

Hey, KIS, a camera that is for the most part automatic, small enough to fit in a pocket. Instant... $$$ in each pack, so no. 8 years old, in what .... 2nd or 3rd grade, UHH people get real!!

My experience teaching 9th grade fro 3 years after retiring is that cellphones are the thing. So fancy would be cell phone with clip on lenses... but save those for another year. My first was a Kodak Hawkeye at 10.. took a camera course with my sister at 11. But life was simple then... push the button... take the film to the drugstore. Now they can home print.. not 24x36 which surly some one will suggest... No they, at 8, do not need a light meter !! Just Keep It Simple.

I periodically buy my nephew a point and shoot, usually Nikon with the 5X to 8X zoom, rechargeable lithium ion battery for around $100.00. I usually get them either on E-bay or at Wal-Mart. Has all the features he wants while still being easy to use, hold, and fits in his pocket. Pictures are not bad, it does take video (which he likes) and he can drop them a few times without breakage. (Although if the lens is out when he drops them that is usually the death sentence.) You can occasionally find them in different colors (red, blue, black or silver). Santa is due to get him one this year for Christmas. (Although 'he' is looking into the shockproof ones this year)

Hi, I,m new to this so here goes. I have twin grandsons ( 8 years old) that would like to have cameras for Christmas.
They like to use my camera. What would be a good starter camera for them? I would have to by 2 so maybe 100.00 each. And remember they are 2 little boys. LOL

I got my son a used Fujifilm S8600 for $76 on eBay for his 6th birthday this summer. It’s a bridge camera/superzoom and he loves it.

It has full auto mode as well as manual options for him to learn later if he maintain his interest.

However, if I’d buy him another one I’d go for a bridge camera with a viewfinder, as the S8600 doesn’t have one.

Fujifilm finepix xp120 is what I bought my son. 28-140mm zoom with a 3” LCD screen. Water proof and very ruggged. Also takes video. $149. He loves taking it into the pool for underwater shots. Nice little camera.

If you can find them, the Canon A1400 is a very good choice. It's small and will fit those 8 year old hands, it has an eye-level finder as well as the screen on the back. It is 16 megapixels and also shoots HD video and comes with a 5-1 optical zoom. It's a real bargain, uses AA beteries and makes very good photos. I've kept one in my glove compartment for about 5 years and it has been very reliable.

My first thought is either refurb or used on ebay. A Tough camera would be good, but pricey. On ebay, it would be difficult to find two identical cameras on ebay, but would they have to be identical? "I got the good camera. You got the lousy one."

I don't think there should be identical cameras. My sister has twins. When they were younger they were always in matching this or that. There becomes no sense of identity or self. At 8 years old two different so-so cameras would be fine. You have to crawl before you learn to walk. Perhaps after a short time like most children, their fancies will be like leaves before the wind.

Thanks for all the replies, lots of help!!! I have decided to give one of them my old canon sx 160 is that I just have in a drawer and I found another one on eBay for about $ 70.00 The sx160 takes really nice photos. I used it mostly for macro with the little big shot lens. Got best in show of photo of dragonfly a few years ago. I think they will be happy. Use the rest of the money for extras, case,sd card, neck strap, screen protector. Can you think of anything else??
THANKS AGAIN!!!!

I bought each of my 5 & 7 yr. old grandsons a FujiFilm XP90's last Xmas for use at the beach and elsewhere. But mostly cause they are practically indestructible. Unfortunately (as I just checked) they are no longer available and seem to have been replaced by the FujiFilm XP120.
