Hi, I,m new to this so here goes. I have twin grandsons ( 8 years old) that would like to have cameras for Christmas.
They like to use my camera. What would be a good starter camera for them? I would have to by 2 so maybe 100.00 each. And remember they are 2 little boys. LOL

Whatever you do don’t get the Discovery Kids digital camera. Easy to use for little ones, but images are crap. How about one of the Fugifilm instant cameras (similar to old Polaroid). They get a print right away. They sell at Michaels for about $100.

My 8yr old grandson likes his grandmothers Canon A1300, and his mothers old Nikon DSLR, though she does not let him use it too often, Bob.

That would depend on how "responsible" the 8 year old is. When I was 5 my parents gave me a Leica IIIf. I still have it and use it. Though, it did have to be rebuilt a few years ago. At 60 years old the shutter wore out.

So, if they are careful with their "stuff", a reasonable camera would be just about any reasonably priced camera.

Since they like to use your camera, buy two of whatever it is you're shooting.

8-year old won't care how the image looks. He'll be happy with the fact that he's captured an image.

Since the OP budget is tight so may be a nice but used ones? Old good cameras have fewer MP, don't have high ISO but they do have all the controls needed to learn on. You didn't have problem with the IIIf when you were 5 so 8 year old should be able to handle a proper camera rather than a P&S.

Welcome to the forum. You can buy inexpensive digital cameras like Vivitar, that do not have a built in flash. Stores such as Walgreen's or similar have them. I have seen them for $60 each. Have LCD screen and SD card slot, and comes in different colors.

Thanks for all the replays. They are normal 8year olds so didn't won't to go with a lot of money. One of them is really good with the camera (has a good eye) the other took photos of the grass and he is the one begging for the camera. lol

A Fujifilm instant camera would be perfect for your grandsons. A great way to get started.

Check KEH.com. You should be able to buy both boys a good starter camera for less than $100 total.

I do not recommend the "instant" cameras, the film will get expensive really fast.

My first thought is either refurb or used on ebay. A Tough camera would be good, but pricey. On ebay, it would be difficult to find two identical cameras on ebay, but would they have to be identical? "I got the good camera. You got the lousy one."
