A large dark shadow like that is NEVER going to result from dust or dirt in your viewfinder or mirror. You would need something the size of a cockroach to do that! It is ALWAYS something external getting in the way. The shutter too fast for the flash is the classic. Or a lens too long and casting a shadow using the flash. Glad you tracked down this gremlin for yourself!

Well, the problem is somewhat neutralized, however, as stated that if i wish to use the flash the camera is going to have to be "looked out" by a licensed technician. Daytime pictures i can take with no problem(so far) but night-time pictures (with the flash) will require the use of the pop up. I do remember taking some daytime pictures with the"AutoMode" on and the flash unit popped up. I don't know why but the picture came out fine with no dark spot. Now that has changed.

This reminds me of something that happened quite a few years ago. My mom complained that all of her pictures were coming out with a red blob in the corner of every shot.

One day we had the family together and she went to take a picture of us. As she held up the camera to take a shot, I realized that I had solved the mystery. The way she was holding the camera, her red-painted fingernail was placed right in front of the lens.

Needless to say, we all had a good laugh.

Are you sure that it is not one of your fingers in front of the lens?

I don't think i am placing my finger in front of the lens. i took a few more shots with a shorter lens and do not incur the problem. Could be that the flash was being affected by my longer lens?! Thanks for your advise!

This is the "BEST" explanation that can also be clearly seen. I see what you mean with this wonderful diagram/picture! Thank you for this thoughtful explanation.
