SOLUTION FOUND:
MartinFisher pointed out that the AF-ON button can be re-assigned and suggested that I make sure it hadn't been. It turns out that while assigning some other buttons, I turned off the AF-ON button (the None option). Sorry for all of the fuss, as is usually the case - it was an operator error. Thanks to all who posted, this site does have a wealth of knowledge and I'm glad I posted my problem before sending the body off to Nikon.

It’s amazing how often in one way or another we change a setting without intending to. Glad you got it worked out!

As far as I know, there is no simple way to restore factory defaults in a modern Nikon DSLR. The two button reset only resets a subset of items, and each memory bank has a reset that only affects the selected bank.

I actually use both on my 810 but if you go to tony northrops 850 tutorial which is great if you haven't seen it, he goes through the set up.if you don't want to watch the whole thing you can let it load a little and grab the index ball and drag it until you see it on his whiteboard. I'd watch the whole thing if you haven't seen it because it may save you a lot of aggravation in the future.all his tutorials are good. I've watched them for each of my nikons and learn something one two or even the third time. I watched the 850 one because I'm thinking about buying one and wanted to see what it had over and above my 810.

Take the battery out. Replace with a charged battery, after no less than 1 min turn it back on , set to factory default.

I do those steps every time I replace a battery. Are you saying that the camera reverts to factory defaults every time I change the battery?

Hell no. Only an imbecile would suggest that.

Thank you, and the problem had nothing to do with BBF settings. I previously posted the explanation.

If you follow Dutzie instructions to do a factory reset - just replace the battery to do the factory reset. Did I read that wrong? Leave out the imbecile part in your response.

My problem is that the AF-ON button does not work at all (with either SHUTTER/AF-ON or AF-ON Only ) the AF-ON should work. There is no setting necessary.

Need a Nikon Warranty repair. I had a similar problem with my D500 when the AF- Mode button stopped working
