The AF-ON button no longer focuses the lens. I have been using BBF so I set the AF Activation back to Shutter/AF-ON and pressing the shutter 1/2 way works fine. The AF-ON button does not work with either AF Activation setting.
I have AF-C selected, I tried cleaning the contacts and changing lenses ... still n/g. I even tried the Factory Reset; evidently that is not one on the settings that is affected by the Factory Reset option. I will be calling Nikon later but I thought I'd post my problem here in case there was something I was over looking.

Howard, did this happen all of a sudden, or did you change a setting and then notice it? Is it a problem on all lenses?

So BBF no longer focuses, but the shutter button does? Have you tried resetting it to BBF? I bet there is a simple solution to this problem.
When I received my D850 the back focus button worked, however when I went to take the shot squeezing the shutter button it would re-focus without me holding the back focus button, I went into the menu and had to shut off the shutter button focus.

That's because the default setting allows both buttons to focus.
AF ON only: setting is for back button focus Only as the shutter button will not work in this setting. Shutter/AF On :setting allows both the BBF and Shutter button to both function. If you in this setting and BBF does not work, it's time for nikon. Now I'm ASSUMING you have gone back and made sure to Reassign your AE-L/AE-F Button to Back Button Focus....

My problem is that the AF-ON button does not work at all (with either SHUTTER/AF-ON or AF-ON Only ) the AF-ON should work. There is no setting necessary.

What a bummer. May have to send that baby in.

Is there a factory reset procedure for this camera? If there is maybe going back to square one will solve your problem without having to resort to repair services.

How about reading the original post BEFORE responding. "...I even tried the Factory Reset..."

Well damn! I missed that. What time is the firing squad? Do I have time for coffee first?
SOLUTION FOUND:
MartinFisher pointed out that the AF-ON button can be re-assigned and suggested that I make sure it hadn't been. It turns out that while assigning some other buttons, I turned off the AF-ON button (the None option). Sorry for all of the fuss, as is usually the case - it was an operator error. Thanks to all who posted, this site does have a wealth of knowledge and I'm glad I posted my problem before sending the body off to Nikon.
Glad you found a solution.
At least you got me to download the manual. I was about to ask if you were using focus shift and hadn't completed the selected number of shots.

Oh, you’re fine. You get 24 hours.
