My daughter has the Canon 40mm pancake lens and I think it is a great lens for the money.
Very sharp edge to edge...
Personally I am more of a Belgian waffle guy...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Pancake lenses are smaller, easier to carry.
Optically they do not have that big difference when compared to a regular lens.

You would be needing a 23mm pancake to have an "X100 wannabe". The 27 is equivalent to a 50mm in "full frame". The X100's 23mm lens is equivalent to a 35mm - major difference.

It's for taking pictures of pancakes.

Yeah, I know this guy whose pancake lenses have to be gluten-free.

Back in the film era, I had a 45mm GN Nikkor lens i used on a Nikormat FTn body. I was a great walk around combo.

Todd, they have those, too. I couldn't find a waffle lens to rent. So, we just stuck to pancakes.
Cheers,
Bob

Sometimes I feel like Rip Van Winkle! Where have I been lately? How long have I been asleep? Every time I wake up in the morning and click on my favorite photo-forum there are new WORDS- photo-slang, nomenclature, terminology and nicknames for gear. I have been involved in photography for over 50 years, I am old but I really try hard to keep up with the trends and times! I check out all the photo-stuff on the Internet, I read all the photo magazines (what's left of them), I teach and hang around with young photographers but I never heard of a PANCAKE LENS! Well- until now!

What's more- at least 50% of my day job in commercial photography is for food and beverage service industry. I haven't been asked to shoot a nice stack of pancakes lately and all I can find in my file is a dish of potato PANCAKES. The closest thing I can come up with is when I shot PIZZA, the camera stand was made in Italy! I don't own a PICKLE lens and I can't think of any other piece of photo gear that is named after food. I don't even ask portrait clients to say CHEESE anymore. My wife says my desk look like a DOG'S BREAKFAST.

I once had a Leica F series camera where the lens could be recessed into the body so it would fit in a pocket. I never did that for fear of forgetting to pull the back out when shooting. Thing is- I never put anything with a lens in my pockets. I have a bad habit of leaving screws, nails, tools, left over messy snacks and car keys in my pockets- none of that stuff is glass-friendly. My old Speed Graphic 4x5 folded up but my first boss had a policy of NEVER collapsing the cameras, keeping them opened all the time and locking the front standard to the infinity stops- all to avoid accidental misalignment! Ever try to sick a Hasselbald in your pocket? Even the film magazines are bulky. I never had the luxury of a compact camera- even my cell phone camera is one of those bigger models. I don't collect antique cameras but I once owned a Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic but I don't wear vests so I gave it to an old uncle who did collect antique cameras.

Oh- there is CLAM SHELL lighting but there are no calm shell lights and you can't eat calm shells. Too bad- they are a great source of elemental calcium. I think they make TUMS out of them. There is a FRENCH tilt- why can't there be a English or Spanish tilt? I'm gonna change my avatar to Mr. Potato-head. When y'all read this you're gonna know I'm a NUT BAR.

I'm gonna have pancakes for breakfast tomorrow.

Have a nice day.

I have a pancake lens 14-42 on an Olympus Pen F. It is the perfect travel lens. I attach it to my belt and can take it anywhere without it being obtrusive. When vacationing or attending a party I don't wnat to bring a larger camera and lens with me. The pictures are great.

If you're ever in Dumfries, Scotland, they have pancake experts available. Make sure you order the pancake lens for lunch. It's on the secret menu.

Actually, using the 1.5 multiplier for the X-E2 APS-C sensor would make it a focal length equivalent of about 40.5mm, which, in my mind is significantly closer to the 23mm's 34.5. Like I wrote, my little rig is a "wannabe"...nothing more.

But what about those of us that don't like fruit on our pancake lenses??
