What exactly is the purpose of a pancake lens and what is it's advantage over a regular lens?
Doesn't stick out, less obtrusive, less bulky to carry
Smaller & lighter than a standard lens. Originally made so as to try to make some cameras more "Pocketable" or less conspicuous.

I'm a Sony a6000 MILC shooter, who recently bought a Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 "kit zoom" that (fortunately) happened to have a mint Fujifilm X-E2 attached to it, when it arrived.
Then I found a Fujinon 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens at less than half-price, as well. That gave me the midrange zoom for travel, and a bonus "X100S wannabe". With the pancake, probably the easiest carrying compact camera (almost a pocket camera) in my experience. Hangs cross-body, under my left arm so well, I sometimes forget it's there.

Less sticking out. Easier to handle, easier to put in your pocket, easier storage in your bag, I have found I don't have to dismount as much.

I thought that was obvious.
So a Canon 1Dx can look like it doesn't have a lens...

A local restaurant, JP Pancake, owned by a friend of mine wanted me to do some photographs for his menu and wall photos. I rented a pancake lens and it worked well. Always use equipment that is made specifically for the purpose for which one is photographing.
